I never understood: Why was the lighting so dark on the PS2 games?

Shut Your Mouth, Here Comes The Pain, SvR-2007... I don't know which game stopped, but all these games match lighting was dark as hell.  Even more so during SYM's post match beatdowns.

It was 08 or 09 to have that kind of lighting last iirc (08 on the PS3 as well). The stage sets weren't as flashy or had the kind of strong lighting that the HD sets do now and that's basically reflected in the game. Besides that I'm assuming the devs probably thought the character models looked better with darker lighting? It's something I've noticed and wondered about before tbh, good question.

A lot of games suffered on the PS2 from being too dark. I believe it was to hide the graphical flaws. If you play multiplat games and play the same game on the original Xbox you will see a big difference in lightning. I always need to adjust my screen when switching between the two.
