Eh honestly promos sucked, yeah they added to universe but the dialog was bad,  nobody actually said or acted like how they would doing promos.

Yeah but had they kept them, they could've improved them. Plus it helped structure the show a bit more like an actual show with stuff happening in between matches whether they were good or bad. They was also a good way to have a wrestler do something in a rivalry thats not doing an attack in a cutscene or wrestling.

Always thought they could've given us like a create a story type of control where you could write lines for the wrestlers in the promos to say and choose actions in the promo. That would've totally fixed the issue of wrestlers not behaving like themselves.

I agree with your counterpoints I feel if and when create a story comes back they'll probably put promos back in and expand on it. I did ask on twitter if show intros could be patched in at later date.

Over the last few years they’ve basically turned universe mode into a towers mode where you can pick a couple of cutscenes between some of the matches.

Them neglecting it has made it feel less and less like building an actual universe unfortunately. Not sure why it always gets ignored for modes like MyFaction.. well outside of £££

Not too bothered by show intros not being in. I think it's probably a case of them being dropped because the majority of players either didn't turn them on or didn't play Universe to begin with. For all of the fan service they've done this year, it's just hard to imagine them knowingly whiffing on something like that if it was legitimately that popular of a thing. They have access to the numbers.

There was no way to “fix” promos with the sheer volume of in-game models the game has. It isn’t like a sports game where you can use any generic bit dialog and it works. Everyone in wrestling is their own person and promos weren’t reflecting that so they got the boot. And thank god.

The old promo engine was from when the series had an identity crisis. It couldn't decide if it was simulating being a performer in the real world or if it was simulating being a wrestler in a kayfabe world. Now that everything is full on kayfabe, being "good at promos" doesn't make any sense. Until we can write the promos ourselves (like in story creator), promos don't make sense in Universe. If you're booking the show, they should say exactly what you tell them to. The rivalry actions allow us to steer the story to a degree, and I imagine they'll just continue to expand that. Promos can happen through the rivalry action cutscenes.

OG members here used to remember the threads about the interviews this guy and Cory Ledesma used to make to promote SvR, guy's a legend

Oh shit, I remember the weird rivalry Ledesma had with The Miz, lol

Writing promos ourselves seem like a lot of chore for Universe Mode

What they can do is set of rivalry specific promos (similar to WWE 2K15 rivalries menu but with promos) and they go from there

Or turn Universe mode into RAW 2 sandbox

The way it is now is just eh

That's what I'm saying about including promos through the rivalry actions. I just think the ability to customize them is something people would be into.

Honestly, Universe has been meh to me for a long time. Put those rivalry actions into MyGM, and I really have no need for Universe at all.

My perfect Universe Mode would be a mix of the SVR 2011 version and Smackdown 2’s season mode. Give me random cutscenes, attacks, promos, arena arrivals. But also keep the customization options of the current version.

That was THQ's vision of the mode

But somewhere along the line when 2k took over suddenly it's a "sandbox"

I think this sums up the paradox of Universe - Either you can customize it, or it's random. Either it does what you tell it to, or it does what it wants.  Universe tries to be both a mode the player books and a mode that books itself for the player. Some people want Universe to take them on a never-ending ride, and some people want to be in the driver's seat. These idea contradict one another.

If they're going to keep Universe going forward, I think it should be structured like MyGM in that you start with a blank card and have the option of selecting "auto book". That way you're not in a constant tug of war with the AI.

Yeah I hate that it’s a sandbox and not a random unpredictable experience anymore. I don’t even touch Universe because there’s nothing to it. I’d rather just run exhibition matches.

I still use Universe Mode but exactly in exhibition style! I do custom shows like Legends of Wrestling and WWE All Stars and edit matches to my liking that I want to do. I only have a world champion (Andre) and title as a placeholder because I have to have at least one but rarely defend it and no promos or rivalries. All random match ups I want to do on the card.

I did have WCW as an original caw show but have stopped doing that and for 2K24 and so on will only have a caw or two for MyRise

While I do like some randomness and the hectic booking of the older universe like in WWE12 for example, at times I just wanna do my own thing and not have to book around the AI and nonsensical booking. Plus even when it was random I still got a lot of the same cutscenes happening over and over.

No. God no. 2K has some serious problems but THQ was equally terrible in the exact opposite way. 2K doesn't do enough for marketing, THQ did too much and lied through their teeth constantly with it.

^This. THQ was legendary for lying through their teeth. Need I remind you of how they intentionally lied about Paul Heyman having a hand in WWE 13's Universe Mode?

They did. Among other things.

2K's marketing is more representative of 2K as a company: they save marketing for the final leg of the game's release and bombard you to buy the game as the release date draws near. They do it for all their brands. It's annoying but effective.

They also used a design philosophy that I just abhor. Focus entirely on one new mechanic each game, market entirely around it, only to find it was shallow and then they'd ignore it from then on and remove it two games later.

And of course, let's not forget "Pins aren't broken, you're just not playing the game correctly". *Censored* you, Sitterson.

I thought thq promo was good. Maybe it’s since I was younger for it but they had me hype for the games even though most of them didn’t live up to expectations.

Last time I remember 2k hyped the game more heavy was 2k16 which was really when they started making the series good.

With a roll-up...i guess.
