**CAT Question a Day**

Roshan invested one half of his savings in scheme A which paid simple interest for 2 years and received Rs 5500 as interest. He invested the remaining in scheme B that paid compound interest, interest being compounded annually, for the same 2 years at the same rate of interest and received Rs 5720 as interest. What was the value of his total savings before investing in these two schemes?

(1) Rs 54725

(2) Rs 68750

(3) Rs 65220

(4) Rs 40750

### Answer and Explanation

**Answer: (2)**

Here the simple interest is Rs 5500 for two years.

So, it is Rs 2750 for one year. As in the first year the compound interest is same as the simple interest, so the compound interest for the first year is Rs 2750.

Hence, the compound interest for the second year is 5720 – 2750 = Rs 2970.

In this figure, Rs 2750 is the interest on the original principal and the remaining Rs 220 is the interest on Rs 2750 for one year. Hence, the rate of interest is {(220/2750) x 100} = 8%

As the rate of interest is 8% and the person is getting Rs 2750 interest for one year, so the amount invested in one scheme = (2750 x 100)/8 = Rs. 34375.

Hence, the total investment = 34375 × 2 = Rs 68750.
