PaperThinWalls
Feel free to use this topic for general discussion on the horror film-genre. (Also, even though we have this topic now, please don't be discouraged from making separate, more in depth topics for a specific film or franchise.) Senex Beast
Thanks for making this thread, I made a mess in the Leatherface thread. My favorite horror sub-genres are creature/monster films and slashers!
MikeM
I don't really like horror films in general, like zombies do nothing for me. I like films with a dark sense of humour, I've seen a few on the horror channel that were entertaining. I liked the Saw movies, but that wasn't really as a result of the gore / torture porn aspect - I liked the story arc. I found Scream entertaining. ZEF
Thanks for making this thread, I made a mess in the Leatherface thread. My favorite horror sub-genres are creature/monster films and slashers! Same here, favourite series of all time are Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th (even the shitty movies that they had) I've actually got a horror/gothic sleeve tattoo that has a Freddy vs Jason piece on the forearm and hoping to add a Nosferatu, Frankenstein's Monster and Edgar Allan Poe raven to it eventually. Well zombies aren't the only thing on the horror genre. Ironically zombies are one of the few sub genres of horror that I actually like. I can do without most horror films, but I always enjoy a good zombie flick as well as bad zombie flicks.

In the defense of Friday the 13th movies (after recently watching the first 5 in the series), at least their Part 2 wasn't as big of a clunker as Elm Street's Part 2. Freddy is still the king of my horror world, but mercy... Part 2 was a really bad movie.
Generations
I feel like a lot of people grow up liking horror movies, and then grow out of them. But, as funny as it is, I think I've been the opposite. Never really a big fan of horror movies as a kid (not scared of them, just didn't care about them)...but as an adult, I find myself watching more and more of them by choice. Creepy Bro
Only difference between my love of horror movies in my youth and my love of horror movies now would be the lack of Fangoria magazines in my life.

Never really a big fan of horror movies as a kid (not scared of them, just didn't care about them)...but as an adult, I find myself watching more and more of them by choice. Yeah me neither. I do like psychological horror a lot more like Silence of the Lambs than I do all out gore like Texas Chainsaw Massacre for example. Never really watched Nightmare or Friday 13th movies or anything like that. I've been known for flicking over to the Horror channel on occasion, but it takes something special to hold my attention, rather than just mindless stuff. Senex Beast
I still love horror just as much as when I was growing up and enjoy discussing films with fellow fans. A thing I always like seeing in horror forums and threads is someone's rankings of horror franchises. Not a ranking of which film is probably the best but preferences of films in order and so here are mine of some big horror franchises... A Nightmare on Elm Street A Nightmare on Elm Street The Dream Warriors New Nightmare Freddy vs Jason Dream Master Dream Child Freddy's Revenge Freddy's Dead A Nightmare on Elm Street(2010) Child's Play Child's Play Child's Play 2 Curse of Chucky Child's Play 3 Bride of Chucky Seed of Chucky Friday the 13th Final Chapter Jason Lives Part 3 Part 2 Friday the 13th New Blood Friday the 13th (2009) Freddy vs Jason Jason Takes Manhattan New Beginning Jason X Jason Goes to Hell Halloween Halloween H20 Halloween II Return of Michael Myers Rob Zombie's Halloween Curse of Michael Myers Revenge of Michael Myers Resurrection Rob Zombie's Halloween II Texas Chainsaw Massacre TCM TCM (2003) TCM 3D The Beginning The Next Generation Part 2 Part
Generations
You know...I was thinking. People were talking about the movie 'Volcano' the other day. Is Volcano actually a horror movie in a way? You have the lava kinda creeping in...can't be stopped...picking off characters one by one. Part of me wants to consider a movie like that to be a horror thriller in a sense. Which is another fun thing about the horror genre, IMO...all the sub-genres of it.

Creepia
They're disaster movies. The setting of the movie is horrible, but it's not a horror film. Maybe more of a thriller if anything, but disaster flicks is the general term.
Generations
They're obviously disaster movies. But the argument is easily there for considering the element of disaster to be a character in itself...which makes them believable horror films. Another example...you have a movie like 'The Edge'...where the characters are stalked by a killer bear. What makes that "not a horror movie"? Is it just that the creature is a bear? If it was an unfamiliar beast, then it's a horror movie? Those lines are really thin, IMO. To me, horror is what you make it. Any movie that instills constant fear or dread throughout could potentially be considered a horror movie, IMO. The difference is just the level of horror and other elements. A natural horror, a paranormal horror, a creature flick, a slasher...all different brands of the horror genre.
Creepy Bro
I'll need to re-watch Friday the 13th part 6, 7, 8 and 9 before I select my order of preference for the franchise... thinking about it now, I'm guessing part 5 will be somewhere at the very bottom of that list. Ugh... that movie...
Generations
One of my favorite horror movies has always been Event Horizon. That movie scared the shit out of me as a kid. Still a really great flick, IMO. And 'Village of the Damned'...I never saw the original one (Children of the Damned)...but, 'Village of the Damned' really shook me with the use of little alien kids...and I'll remember that grill scene forever. Generations
^ Lol...don't even think that movie was/is that bad (not the original or the remake). A lot of people must have a low tolerance for shock horror. The worst *censored*ing movie I've ever seen...that I would never want to see again, or wish upon anyone...is Human Centipede 2. The first one was weird, but easy enough to sit through. The second one is the single most disturbing thing I've ever watched. I honestly think that movie should be banned everywhere. Not safe for life.

maskedmaniac
Now I have to watch Human Centipede 2. Please don't. I've watched some awful shit online. Nothing illegal...immoral definitely but not illegal so I don't see how this move would mess me up somehow...even more.
Generations
It's just repulsive. There's a difference between watching some awful shit online for a few minutes, and watching a feature length film that cranks the disturbing factor up to 11 at the beginning and never stops. It's the kind of thing where it clearly isn't even using shock as a venue for storytelling...it's just intentionally being as gross and twisted as it can be. You'll feel like you need to take a shower and watch some cartoons afterwards.
Jeb ★
I refuse to watch the Human Centipede movies, any of them. I've seen like a trailer but that's it. Just the concept of it makes my head scream NOPE
