Coronavirus has exposed everything that's wrong with USA that Bernie could fix (if he had enough support anyway), but sadly the right and many Democrats will refuse to do anything about it because they don't care about the middle class and poor. There are concerns that shutting down schools will result in impoverished kids starving and being homeless, as well as how it's expensive AND hard to get checked for coronavirus, whereas Australia will check everyone.

On top of that, you have Trump lying, and trying his best to keep the numbers low rather than try to solve this pandemic. At least he did more than Boris Johnson.

Da Croaner brings out da bess in all of us.

Of course insurance companies would make bank off this. When nobody else is getting money, they always will. Prolly rubbing their ashy add hands together as soon as the Wuhan news broke.

I was watching The Doctors the other day and they were talking about how U.S. is selling medicines at like 5 times what they charge for the same sheeit south of the border. Cashing in on people's lives is standard practice here

Never. Not as long as a certain group and people are in power.

It will be amusing to follow exactly how republicans respond to this concept Trump has about sending money "directly to Americans" to help during the virus outbreak. You know...kinda sounds like socialism. But, they wouldn't really be the kind of people who would ever support such a thing. I mean...it's not like they can just be told what to favor, and blindly follow it because that's what they're told to do, is it? Surely not. That would be silly. No one would ever be so baseless as to...ah...I can't keep a straight face anymore. 🤣

Republicans are apparently against helping Americans out because they think Americans will be too lazy, even though they have no problem giving billions of dollars to corporations. It's hard not to hold republicans and some democrats responsible for USA doing badly for decades given shit like this. Also, I hope McConnell loses hard and gets disgraced so badly soon for how he's worked against the middle class and lower's interest for years.

If it's coming from Trump though, it's probably not socialism, because TRUMP!!

Man, politics just suck in the USA. I mean, nobody can get on the same page for the greater good.

Honestly, politics are like that everywhere. The difference is that we have a leader here who goes out of his way to divide people. Case in point, intentionally calling this "the Chinese virus" when he knows damn well what it is actually called. It doesn't even matter if he's "right" in saying that it came from China. You know what it is called. You are just being divisive...

I think he says dumbass and bigoted shit for his cult members to garner more support. His supporters love it, especially when he blames other ethnicities like China for issues even though Americans are the main reason we're in quarantine. His bullshit rhetoric is why people of color and minorities get attacked.

In fairness, China, or rather their government did not help themselves AT ALL by arresting the journalists and doctors who were trying to warn us about Corona. Once this is sorted to say they have a *censored*ing shipload to answer to is like saying the sun is a bit warm or the Sahara Desert is a bit sandy.

That's not fair when you have Brits, Americans, and formerly Italians refusing to be quarantined and still traveling and going to places, some as recently as Spain and Miami for spring break. If they practiced social distancing at the least, then maybe there wouldn't be a lockdown or so many people infected that it resulted in a strong push for quarantine, if not forced quarantine.

It is fair when if the Chinese government had done their job in first place by taking it seriously and not trying to cover it up we wouldn’t be needing quarantines. If they had shut their borders first it could have been contained, instead they tried to shut up anyone who tried to warn us about it and the rest of the world is paying for it. As far as I’m concerned, anyone infected with Corona is blood on the Chinese Government’s hands.

well, that would be just delusional.

not trying to be the devils advocate, because yes, they could have handled the situation at the very beginning better and trying to shush anyone about it... the thing is though... we don' know exactly what happened anyway. Also, one of the possible reasons they handled it in the way they did is to try and censor it, to contain it, and not create panic... but like I've said, it's not really that black and white.

Also, they couldn't have just "shut down their borders". I think you really underestimate of how big of a country China is, and the scope of... well everything.  The same goes for every major country. You could say the same for Italy: "well they didn't take it seriously", that's right, they didn't, and were ill prepared, and it's one of the main causes for the shitstorm we have today. Millions and millions of people are still not taking it seriously to this day, because for more than a decade, or even decades, with the quantity of information and data we process everyday, it's hard to differ the truth from reality, and true from false.  I know that I am digressing now, but on that note, this pandemic is very very symptomatic of a lot of things that has been ailing our societies for such a long time now.

This has also put an accent on the illogical thinking that went against the "evil globalism". That kind of isolationst policies are just not realistic not productive anymore.  The fragility of capitalism has once again been exposed also, but we've already talked about that in this thread....

That's bullshit. China is responsible for itself, but things getting as bad as they are now in the West is because of what citizens are doing. There are reports that they're not being vetted properly when they're in the airports, some airports have crowding, and they're going off to vacations and coming in close contact. As I said, if social distancing was practiced, and if majority of people isolated themselves unless necessary, then things wouldn't have gotten as bad as they have. China could do everything properly, and coronavirus would still spread everywhere the way it has because of how people are behaving.

@AONO.How is it?

”Not trying to be the devil’s advocate” proceeds to be the devil’s advocate anyway but I digress...

Yeah, small wonder why we don’t know the full truth, considering the bit we do have is “scientists and journalists try to warn us of dangerous virus and get chucked in the slammer because of it.” There are very few ways to look good out of that story. Maybe they didn’t want to create a panic at first, but jailing people who say “things are gonna get bad” just reeks of trying to preserve your own self image above all else.

OK, I’ll give you they may not have been able to close the borders completely, but they still could have slowed things down somewhat (ie. not allowing tourists in/out) which would have at least slowed the spread.

@M3J It isn’t bullshit. Western civilians wouldn’t have to practise social distancing or worry about bring vetted properly if the Chinese government had done everything properly. When they were warned they had two options:

A: Heed the warnings and take appropriate action to slow the spread as much as possible if not completely contain it.

B: Arrest the journalists, try to cover everything up and act as if it’s all A-OK and hunky dory to protect their own self image.

No prizes for guessing which one they picked.

I’ll concede, it may have reached the west eventually, but not nearly as quickly and with as much force if the Chinese Government had been more focused with solving the issue rather than covering it up.

The Chinese government may have tried to cover it up...but the US government literally did the exact same thing...and that was AFTER we had actually seen what was happening elsewhere. Trump was tweeting about this shit back in January and February, saying it was no big deal. That was a cover-up that cost us bigtime...and that was after China had already said "yeah...it's bad".

The West was also warned about the virus, and the people did nothing, and the US and UK governments aren't doing much. Even if China did everything properly, we'd still be up the shit creek because of the people and how the Western countries are run.

The election isn’t really important at the moment even though it is, but it’s crazy/sad/frustrating/some bullshit that in a time like this, Bernie Sanders looks even more like the best person to be in the White House right now. All of the policies he has been fighting for, for 40+ years all of a sudden seem like common sense for everyone who opposed them. Isn’t a social safety net meant for situations like this? Imagine how much better off people would be if these policies they’re scrambling to implement were already firmly in place.

Bernie has been live-streaming everyday, gaining support and using his platform to focus on the pandemic, behaving more presidential than the actual president and the Democratic presidential candidate who has seemingly disappeared long enough for people to worry that he’s dead (I’m not joking this is a real concern I have seen a lot the past few days).
