New Pink Floyd Album 'The Endless River' Out in October

Recommended Posts

Pink Floyd may be releasing a new record this fall, according to guitarist David Gilmour's wife Polly Samson, who tweeted (and possibly leaked?) the news earlier this morning.

"Btw Pink Floyd album out in October is called 'The Endless River'" Polly Samson tweeted. "Based on 1994 sessions is Rick Wright's swansong and very beautiful."

Consequence of Sound reports that touring vocalist Durga McBroom-Hudson, who sang backup with the band throughout the 1980s and 1990s, provided further proof on her Facebook page later in the day, posting a photo from a recording session, confirming that the record will consist of "all unreleased material," and adding:

"The recording did start during 'The Division Bell' sessions (and yes, it was the side project originally titled "The Big Spliff" that [Floyd drummer] Nick Mason spoke about). Which is why there are Richard Wright tracks on it. But David and Nick have gone in and done a lot more since then. It was originally to be a completely instrumental recording, but I came in last December and sang on a few tracks. David then expanded on my backing vocals and has done a lead on at least one of them. That's the song you see being worked on in the photo."

The band's longtime engineer Andy Jackson also confirmed the album's release via fan site Floydian Slip; while the band's current label home, Warner, has yet to confirm the release, Gilmour's manager hinted to the site that a proper announcement would come this monday (July 7). Billboard has reached out to the label and will update as the story progresses.

If the reports are true, "The Endless River" would come just in time to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the band's final album, 1994's "The Division Bell"; the "new" material would have been recorded around the same time. Gilmour currently has a solo album in the works; no word on whether Roger Waters will have been included, but his last appearance on a Floyd record was in 1983 with "The Final Cut," and he reportedly has a new solo album in the works.

Keyboardist Rick Wright -- whose membership in Pink Floyd fluctuated over the years, thanks to a brief exit in 1979 stemming from clashes with Waters while recording "The Wall," a stint as a live session musician while the band toured that album, and an official reentry into the band by the time "Division Bell" was released -- died at 65 of cancer in 2008.

YES!

If the album is anything like "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" and "The Division Bell," I can't say I'm that interested. I'm not fond of Waters-less Floyd albums... However, on a more positive note, I do look forward to the album art. They tend to be visually creative and appealing.

im 50/50 on the Rodger Waters thing. as great as The Wall and The Final Cut were, they were a little too depressing. i know they were done as tribute to his father, but still. Like David, Nick and Richard said in the past, the music started to become about Rodger and less about Pink Floyd as a whole.

oh i can't wait to see the art work. i just hope Storm Thorgerson did the work before he died last year. any art work used by someone else won't have that same magic.

The Division Bell was decent, but far from my favorite Pink Floyd project, so I'm not really looking forward to this either. I'm barely interested in bands' new material that lack important members (e.g. I don't give a shit about post-73 Deep Purple).

Pink Floyd has revealed details of its upcoming album, The Endless River, which marks the band’s first new release in 20 years.

According to a new interview in Uncut (via SteveHoffman.TV), the album has a release date of November 10th. David Gilmour and Nick Mason began the recording process in November 2013 and spent 30 days overdubbing guitars and recording drums. Roxy Music guitarist and producer Phil Manzanera was also heavily involved in the creative process.

Update: Pink Floyd’s website has revealed the album’s artwork (above) and tracklist (below). Spanning 18 tracks, the album will be available on standard CD, double vinyl, and as a deluxe box set that includes 39-minutes of extra material. Pre-orders are now ongoing.

Of particular note is the inclusion of original organ recordings from Pink Floyd’s Richard Wright, taken from rehearsals dating back to June 1969.

The duo also clarified some of the ongoing rumors, namely that the material draws heavily from Gilmour’s unreleased experimental album, The Big Spliff. According to Uncut, the album is not at all based on The Big Spliff and incorporates only a few seconds from the original project. It also does not contain any material “The Soundscape”, the instrumental track originally released on the band’s 1995 Pulse Cassette.

Rather, The Endless River contains four different pieces on each side of the record, which focus on the “more atmospheric and digressive aspects of Pink Floyd and includes snippets of conversation.” One song, “Louder Than Words”, contains lyrics embracing the full history of the band. Gilmour sings: “We bitch and we fight // But this thing that we do // It’s louder than words // The sum of our parts // The beat of our hearts/ It’s louder than words.”

The Endless River Tracklist:
01. Things Left Unsaid
02. It’s What We Do
03. Ebb And Flow
04. Sum
05. Skins
06. Unsung
07. Anisina
08. The Lost Art of Conversation
09. On Noodle Street
10. Night Light
11. Allons-y (1)
12. Autumn’68
13. Allons-y (2)
14. Talkin’ Hawkin’
15. Calling
16. Eyes To Pearls
17. Surfacing
18. Louder Than Words

Well, as long as its the Floyd then I'm definitely gonna be buying this.

If it shows any shades of 71-79 Floyd then it will surely be worth my money. I like that most of the album will be instrumental. Gilmour's (and his wife) lyrics are, as Waters describes, very "third-rate" and if the album contains similarities to previous instrumentals like Careful with That Axe Eugene, Marooned, One of These Days or Any Colour You Like, then I will definitely enjoy this album.

I'm not sure about that cover though... but oh well.

After months of rumors, Pink Floyd have finally announced the details of their new album The Endless River, which hits shelves on November 10th. It's the group’s first new release since 1994’s The Division Bell. According to a press release, The Endless River is a “four-sided instrumental album,” though one track, “Louder Than Words,” has lyrics by David Gilmour’s wife Polly Samson. It was produced by Gilmour, Phil Manzanera, Youth and Andy Jackson and is available for pre-order right now.

The project began with Gilmour and Floyd drummer Nick Mason sorting through music they recorded with keyboardist Rick Wright (who died in 2008) during the Division Bell sessions. "We listened to over 20 hours of the three of us playing together and selected the music we wanted to work on for the new album," Gilmour said in a statement. "Over the last year we've added new parts, re-recorded others and generally harnessed studio technology to make a 21st century Pink Floyd album. With Rick gone, and with him the chance of ever doing it again, it feels right that these revisited and reworked tracks should be made available as part of our repertoire."

Adds Mason: "The Endless River is a tribute to Rick. I think this record is a good way of recognizing a lot of what he does and how his playing was at the heart of the Pink Floyd sound. Listening back to the sessions, it really brought home to me what a special player he was."

Pink Floyd quietly disbanded in late 1994 at the conclusion of their worldwide stadium tour in support of The Division Bell. They reformed with Roger Waters for a four-song set at Live 8 in 2005. The following year, Gilmour went on a solo tour that featured Richard Wright on keyboards. (Waters played a handful of gigs with Mason around the same time.) Gilmour and Mason joined Waters at a 2011 stop on his The Wall Live show in London, but have consistently shot down any talk of a reunion tour. Waters has no involvement with The Endless River and the group hasn’t announced any plans to support the disc with any live work.

I don't really know if I'll get this album, the band just seemed to deteoriate like PaperThinWalls said when they released a "Momentary Lapse of Reason" & after that... didn't particularly like their new style either... nothing beats their classic albums like DSOM, Meddle, Wish You Were Here, The Wall, etc.

I dunno about that man. Being part of and being close to a few bands over the years I'm very interested in band dynamics. Four or however many parts making a whole thing. To me Waters contributions lyrically and thematically, even just taking them in the direction they took in the post-Syd era are just as important as Gilmours contributions melodically. I couldn't imagine another drummer doing what Mason does for PF. Especially the interplay between Masons' drums and Waters' bass. I think the same can be said of so many bands.

Anyway, reports around that this new PF may be getting close to the most pre-ordered album of all time on Amazon.

Also...Roger. heh...

""Some people have been asking Laurie, my wife, about a new album I have coming out in November. Errhh? I don’t have an album coming out, they are probably confused. David Gilmour and Nick Mason have an album coming out. It’s called 'Endless River'. David and Nick constitute the group Pink Floyd. I on the other hand, am not part of Pink Floyd. I left Pink Floyd in 1985, that’s 29 years ago. I had nothing to do with either of the Pink Floyd studio albums, 'Momentary Lapse Of Reason' and 'The Division Bell', nor the Pink Floyd tours of 1987 and 1994, and I have nothing to do with Endless River. Phew! This is not rocket science people, get a grip."
