WON is reporting that CM Punk is not progressing well as a fighter. Punk’s original fight date was pushed back because of back and shoulder injuries. His first scheduled opponent is Mickey Gall.

It is, reportedly, expected that Gall will “run through” Punk whenever they do fight. So far in his short career, Gall is 2-0. The rumors WON is hearing is that Punk has not fared well live sparring.

The concerns with Punk’s progression have grown because it has taken him so long. Cain Velazquez had the same surgery as Punk a few weeks earlier and is on the UFC 200 card.

Punk’s first fight was originally hoped to be in the summer of 2015 or the fall. Injuries and transition into MMA have caused the delay for his UFC debut. As for the FS1 reality show that will determine Punk’s opponent, WON has not heard anything new other than that they have begun taping the show.

Since the injuries, UFC has kept a low profile on Punk. The signing of Punk brought massive media attention, and WON still thinks Punk’s first fight will still garner media attraction.

WON notes that since he may not be able to pull off proving his critics wrong, the next moves for Punk could be interesting.

The long-anticipated UFC debut of Cris Justino was a rousing success on Saturday at UFC 198. Not only did she dispatch Leslie Smith in under 90 seconds, but looked crisp in her striking and methodical in her attack. More importantly, while depleted on the scales making a pound less than the contracted 140-pound catchweight limit at 139, Cyborg did not appear overly drained and rehydrated with any reported issues.

According to George Lockhart, the nutritionist and hydration specialist to numerous MMA fighters including Cyborg, most fighters he works with float around a pound of their contracted weight. There was no intention to push her to 139 instead of 140, but rather, that occurred as a natural by-product of their cutting process.

The question going forward is what UFC will do to make use of her ability in the cage and marketability outside of it. Cyborg stated she's happy to defend her Invicta featherweight title while taking catchweights in the UFC.

The more lucrative financial and sporting opportunities, however, exist at women's bantamweight with names like Cat Zingano, Ronda Rousey, Juliana Pena, Holly Holm, Miesha Tate and others all competing in a weight class below her's.

Given where she is and where the money is relative to that - and the difference of three pounds for non-title bantamweight fights - how realistic is it now to get to 135?

"You hit the nail right on the head. Could she make the cut? Absolutely," Lockhart said on Monday's The Luke Thomas Show. "She can make 135. She can make 130, but performing? That's another question. That right there comes down to time. She put in a lot of time for this."

Lockhart argues pushing Cyborg to a number on a scale isn't really the issue. Instead, it's what the fighter will be able to reasonably accomplish in the course of resource depletion to achieve it.

"People don't realize how hard it was just to get down to 139. She had to do three-a-days every single day of the week. Sundays she had a day off, but still. Three-a-days, it's a lot. She's running, doing a lot of road work."

That said, he isn't against the move in principle, particularly if Cyborg requested it. He noted explicitly it is far from optimal for her competition needs, but as business pressures creep more and more into the conversation, it's a possibility Cyborg and her time could be forced to take seriously.

"If she ever said, 'You know what? I want to come down to the 135.' I think it'd be possible, but is it definite? Honestly, I don't know. The amount of work she put in to get to 139...

"They basically give me a call and say, 'Hey, George, she needs to make 145'. Ok, good to go. 145. 'George, we need her at 140.' I'll get her there," he explained. "If they ever called me to get her to 135, we'd come up with a game plan and obviously we'd go for it make sure Cris is fighting optimally as she makes that weight in a healthy way."

The injury bug continues to bite the UFC hard, as yet another pay-per-view main event has fallen through. Chris Weidman is injured and out of UFC 199, according to FloCombat.

Weidman was originally scheduled to re-match Luke Rockhold in just under three weeks at UFC 199 for the Middleweight Championship. The injury has yet to be specified, and there's no word on if the UFC will seek a replacement.

Options for the UFC could include Michael Bisping, who has shown a willingness to compete on short notice and in big fights. Also, Ronaldo 'Jacare' Souza made short work of opponent Vitor Belfort last Saturday at UFC 198.

The main event of UFC 196 was changed when Nate Diaz replaced Rafael dos Anjos. A month later at UFC 197, Ovince Saint Preux served as a replacement for the injured Daniel Cormier in the main event of that show. Just last week, Anderson Silva was removed from UFC 198 and had to undergo surgery. The UFC also had to shift an entire event due to injuries sustained by Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum this year.

UFC 199 takes place June 4 at The Forum in Inglewood, California. Wrestling Inc. will have full, live coverage of the event, which features Dominick Cruz vs. Urijah Faber for the UFC Bantamweight Championship.

You can count on "The Count."

Michael Bisping will step in and face middleweight champion Luke Rockhold in the main event of UFC 199 on June 4 in Los Angeles, UFC president Dana White announced Wednesday on ESPN's SportsCenter. Chris Weidman fell out of the fight Tuesday due to a neck injury.

White said the fight that "makes the most sense" for Rockhold is Ronaldo Souza. But "Jacare" injured his meniscus in a win over Vitor Belfort last Saturday at UFC 198 and will need surgery, according to White. Bisping was the next man in line.

Rockhold (15-2) defeated Bisping via second-round submission in 2014. White said despite the previous victory that Rockhold was "excited" to fight Bisping again. The trash talk between the two men leading into that fight was very heated.

"They don't like each other," White said.

Rockhold, 31, won the title from Weidman at UFC 194 back in December. The former Strikeforce champion has won five in a row.

Bisping (28-7) has never earned a title shot in the UFC before now after nine years in the organization, many of them near the top of the middleweight division. The British MMA pioneer has won three straight and is coming off a unanimous decision win over Anderson Silva in January.

  • 3 weeks later...

While appearing on ESPN earlier today to promote UFC 199, UFC President Dana White said Ronda Rousey will be out of action for a few months after she underwent knee surgery yesterday.

White said the procedure to clean up Rouseys knee was nothing serious, but also said they were hoping to get the former UFC Bantamweight Champion back this year, possibly hinting at her return being delayed until 2017.

In regards to who Rousey could face when she does return, White says Rousey will be in line for a title fight:

Whoever has the belt is who Ronda Rousey will fight. Injuries happen, somebody falls out and somebody else slides in. Im not saying Holly Holm couldnt be the champion by the time Ronda comes back. Whoever holds that belt when Ronda is ready.

What an unbelievable fight card. All the fights were great other than Cruz v Faber. That fight just showed Cruz is the GOAT bantamweight. So happy for Bisping being a Brit. UFC 199 probably was going under the radar but I highly doubt 200 is going to be as good.

What a shit replacement. I mean he looked better then he ever has against Silva but man what a drop off in talent. Rockhold should run right though him.

UFC 199 is going to be fantastic. Rockhold for the *censored*ing win.

Hahahaahahaha

Yeah *Censored* Dana for that. What a prick. He got rid of the best non-fighting MMA personalities around. Ever since this Reebok deal the UFC is getting shitty.

Don't think the UFC doesn't realize they are just helping Bellator out more and more.

Two Three big stories.

1) If you missed it in the WWE section...

Brock Lesnar has an opponent for his UFC 200 showdown.

Joining Hannah Storm during the Monday morning edition of SportsCenter, the 38-year-old fighter revealed he will face Mark Hunt at the July 9 event.

"Why not? It could be anybody. I didn't care," Lesnar said of the announcement. "If Dana White called me and said, 'You have opponent X, Y, and Z, who do you want?' He never gave me those options. This is the guy that we want you to face, I said, 'Great. This is what I'm going to do.'"

Lesnar has not competed since UFC 141 in December 2011, where he was defeated via first-round TKO by Alistair Overeem. During his initial UFC run, Lesnar went 4-3, winning and twice defending the UFC heavyweight title.

Hunt, meanwhile, has won two straight both via knockout his latest a first-round starching of Frank Mir at UFC Fight Night 85 in Brisbane, Australia.

UFC 200 takes place July 9 at Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena. The card is headlined by a light heavyweight title unification bout between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier.

2) Ariel Helwani will address what went down at UFC 199:

MMA Fighting reporter and host Ariel Helwani was removed from UFC 199, along with MMA Fighting photo journalist Esther Lin and MMA Fighting videographer Casey Leydon, after Ariel accurately broke the news of Brock Lesnar's return to the UFC and the forthcoming Nate Diaz vs. Conor McGregor rematch.

MMA Fighting and SB Nation fully support Ariel, Casey, Esther and the entire MMA Fighting staff. And we appreciate the support we have received from the MMA Fighting audience and community.

The UFC has not been in contact with us since revoking the credentials of Ariel, Esther and Casey. But we will keep you, our audience, informed of the situation.

Ariel will address what occurred at UFC 199 on tomorrow's MMA Hour. The show begins at 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT

3) CM Punk's first fight: Target date revealed

According to Jeremy Botter of FloCombat, CM Punks first UFC fight looks like it will be taking place at UFC 202 on August 20th in Las Vegas.

As we previously noted, UFC is currently working on a documentary special profiling Mickey Gall, who is expected to be Punks first opponent, and the release of the special would coincide for an August 20th fight at UFC 202.

If the fight does indeed take place at UFC 202, it will join a card headlined by Conor McGregor vs Nate Diaz 2, but Botter was careful to note he hopes he didnt ruin any announcements. This is of course a mild shot at UFC for throwing MMA journalist Ariel Helwani out of UFC 199 last night and banning him from the promotion for life after Helwani reported the news of Brock Lesnar fighting at UFC 200 and McGregor vs Diaz 2 before UFC made the official announcements:
