As for Germany, it's not that they didn't try or were complacent. Mexico outclassed them tactically, neutralized most of their threat by reducing it to long distance shots and grabbed them by the throat on the break by having Lozano jump all over Kimmich. Also, nobody at Germany was tracking back, first by choice, then by circumstances. Khedira is finished, Kroos wasn't much for defensive work, neither was Özil.
Adding to that, Germany lacked creativity up front, as none of the dribblers, passers and runners came up with something dynamic or out of the box.
Only Brandt and Özil had a somewhat positive game and Brandt was limited to a 5-minute sub appearance where he nearly twatted it top bins on a volley.
Sweden and South Korea are annoying little teams too, so Germany could easily be out after the second round.
