WWE issued a statement Friday when asked about the rumor that chairman Vince McMahon is looking to reboot the failed XFL football league.

Deadspin's David Bixenspan passed along the statement, which noted McMahon is funding Alpha Entertainment in order to explore investment opportunities across multiple platforms, including professional football:

Earlier in the day, Brad Shepard of Nation One News reported that McMahon is looking to bring back the XFL and may announce its return Jan. 25.

McMahon announced the founding of the XFL in February 2000, and its only season took place during the winter and spring of 2001.

The league featured eight teams that played 10 games each, and the Los Angeles Xtreme defeated the San Francisco Demons to win the inaugural title.

L.A. was led by league MVP Tommy Maddox, who went on to enjoy some success as a quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

People also remember the XFL for running back Rod Smart, who wore "He Hate Me" on the back of his jersey. Smart later played for the Philadelphia Eagles and Carolina Panthers.

XFL games aired on NBC, UPN and TNN, and while ratings were initially strong, they waned, leading to the league's closure.

The XFL recently returned to pop culture prominence after ESPN aired a 30 for 30 documentary entitled This Was the XFL.

Although other professional football leagues existmost notably the Canadian Football League and the Arena Football Leaguethe NFL has been the unquestioned king of the sport since the USFL ended in 1986.

Sounds like he's more interested in investing in teams and events that already exists, over starting up an entire football league like the XFL. Maybe bodybuilding or some shit. Maybe he'll invest in a MLS-team?

lol nah

Was strongly rumoured Shane was interested in buying Newcastle.

Personally I think this is more evidence that Vince has flipped his lid.

Considering the timing it probably will go over better. It will be branding as just football and not political statements. From what I hear some football fans stop watching the NFL because of all the kneeling and stuff. Then with Thump and NFL players rocky relationship and Thump and Vince being friends. He could gain support from the president even though claiming it is not about being political.

The only reason I want Vince to make a new footbsll league is maybe someone other than EA could make a football game.

Konami do. (Oh wait, that's proper football) :shifty:

WWE NEWS

Vince McMahon sells $105 million worth of his WWE stock, presumably to fund his new football league
Published on December 21, 2017

The latest SEC filing posted on WWE’s corporate website has a note on Vince McMahon selling 3,340,000 shares of his WWE stock so that he could fund his new company Alpha Entertainment, LLC. That is the company believed to have been set up so that he could start his new football league. Last weekend we noted that McMahon’s lawyers registered trademarks for UrFL, UFL, and United Football League.

The filing states:

“On December 21, 2017, Vincent K. McMahon (“Mr. McMahon”), Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. (the “Company”), sold 3,340,000 shares of the Company’s Class A common stock in a block trade made in accordance with the provisions of Rule 144 of the Securities Act of 1933, as amended. Mr. McMahon executed the sale primarily to fund a separate entity from the Company, Alpha Entertainment LLC, which Mr. McMahon established to explore investment opportunities across the sports and entertainment landscapes, including professional football. Mr. McMahon has informed the Company that he has no current plan to sell additional shares of the Company’s stock and that he intends to continue in his capacity as the Company’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for the foreseeable future.

The shares sold by Mr. McMahon represent approximately 4.3% of the Company’s total outstanding shares of Class A and Class B common stock. After the sale, Mr. McMahon beneficially owns 32,193,375 shares of the Company’s Class B common stock, which represents approximately 82.8% of the Company’s total voting power and approximately 41.8% of the Company’s total outstanding shares of common stock.”

The news, first picked up by Chris Harrington, is a strong indication that McMahon is very serious about his plans to start a football league. He would likely need more funding from other partners to get the league up and running.
