He had a short run on the independent circuit before earning a WWE developmental contract. He spent two years in NXT. Toward the end of the second year he teamed with his younger brother, Curtis, who he helped get a tryout. The tag team was short lived as he was called up to join the main roster. He had a moderately successful solo run earning the United States championship and challenging for the WWE Championship, but his brother would eventually join him on the main roster. Notes: King is a practitioner of Tang Soo Do and wears a Tang Soo Doo emblem on the back of his tights. He also wears a shirt featuring the emblem and the name of the school he was trained at. King considers Kurt Angle, Booker T, and Chris Jericho to be his primary influences. King considers the German Suplex to be his favorite move and unless his opponent is too large will attempt to a few times per match, though not to Brock Lesnar levels. Despite training in BJJ since childhood who pursued a career in pro wrestling as opposed to Mixed Martial Artist. He'd instead pursue professional wrestling. Preferring the stiff no nonsense style of Japanese wrestling he went to train in a Japanese dojo. Mercer spent several years touring with Japanese promotions and married a Mai Suzuki, a Japanese wrestler. He reluctantly returned to the United States because of a visa issue. He and his wife decided to try out at the WWE, feeling that it was the only American promotion he was interested in, mostly because of the pay. He spent two years in NXT before being called up to the Raw roster where he briefly held the Intercontinental Championship. After having something of a fall off, he’s planning on a comeback. Notes He is heavily influenced by Kenta Kobashi and to an extent by Samoa Joe and Brock Lesnar. He is fluent in Japanese. He bought his former BJJ dojo, Sin City Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He sports the logo on the back of his tights and often wears t-shirts or hoodies with the logo on it. The scarring across his torso came from a bar brawl. He earned an academic scholarship and studied business in college. After graduating he would begin working on the independent circuit. He eventually landed a WWE tryout and was signed to a development deal. While training in the performance center. He later managed to get tryouts for his cousin, Carlos and his cousin’s best friend, Anthony. Once the two of them secured deals they formed a stable called the Cartel. The stable would later be joined by his fiancée, Brenda, who has been training in the performance center. Notes: Rodriguez is of Puerto Rican and African-American descent. He is fluent in Spanish. He runs a small clothing company called Street Smart. The company provides his stable with their ring gear. He considers William Regal to be his primary influence but he also considers Eddie Guerrero and The Rock to be influences. He suggested the name The Cartel based on the business definition and is offended when people bring up the criminal definition. She reluctantly began her training at a young age at the instance of her mother and uncle who felt that she needed to be able to defend herself as a young woman in a rough neighborhood. During her teen years she actually began to embrace martial arts taking part in numerous tournaments and placing well in all of them. Her interest in wrestling was sparked when her uncle took her to a show and she immediately decided that she wanted in. She began training while in college and began studying numerous tapes that her uncle gave her. Upon completion of college and of her training she began taking bookings. She also went to several WWE tryouts and took notes on what to improve on each time. When she finally signed her contract it had somewhat gone to her head and she proclaimed herself to be a "Renaissance Woman." Oddly enough her success began to humble her and she began to try to love up to the name she never earned. Notes: Her nickname "The Renaissance Woman" is actually a reference to the Harlem Renaissance. It's also a reference to her being more or less equally skilled in all areas. While she hasn't been a fan of wrestling long enough to have a lot of influences, she did take a liking to her uncle’s favorite wrestler, Booker T and uses several of his moves. Character Background: Laura Oxley has been a wrestling fan for all of her life. Oxley has also struggled with her weigh most of her life. Her attempts to get into shape had allowed her to get into good shape, nut she ended up bulking up instead of slimming down. She ended up delving deeper into weight lifting and getting into powerlifting. In addition to powerlifting she began training to become a professional wrestler. After completing her training she divided her time between powerlifting contests and bookings with independent promotions. Because of her look she never considered WWE to be an option and felt that her best shot of success would probably wrestling in Japan. She spent several years wrestling in Japan, with the only drawback was that she'd get homesick. Once she noticed a change in how WWE handled their women's division she finally tried out and earned a contract. She spent two years in NXT even winning the women's championship before being called up to Smackdown. Notes: She considers The Undertaker, Kane, Bradshaw, and Giant Bernard to be influences on her style. While in NXT she resumed taking part in powerlifting competitions, however she stopped again once she reached the main roster due to obvious scheduling issues. Selena Lopez The Star Girl Character Information: Hometown: San Diego, California Height: 5’3” Weight: 115 lbs. Alignment: Face Affiliation: none Athletic Background: Gymnastics Style: High Flyer Signature Moves: Gamengirl/Cartwheel Moonsault, Chick Kick 1 Finishing Moves: Shooting Star 1, Sky Walker (Standing Shiranui 2) Character Background: Selena Lopez is a lifelong pro-wrestling fan and she idolizes hometown hero, Rey Mysterio. She had plans to become a wrestler since she was a child, much to the chagrin of her parents. Her parents got her into gymnastics. She initially didn’t enjoy gymnastics, but knowing she wanted to be a high flyer like Mysterio she used that as motivation to improve as a gymnast. She discontinued her gymnastic training upon reaching college as the NCAA doesn’t offer gymnastic scholarships and instead pursued wrestling training. She completed her training around the time she graduated and began taking bookings at local independent promotions in California and even got booked a few times in Mexico. Highly influenced by Lucha Libre she relished her time south of the border and considered signing with a promotion in Mexico until she got a WWE tryout. She’s been in NXT for two years. She’s gotten shots at the Women’s championship but hasn’t won it yet and that’s her current goal at the moment. Notes: She’s of Mexican descent and speaks Spanish fluently as she still has many relatives in Mexico. She’s a bit of a science fiction nerd and her nickname “Star Girl” is derived from her interest in movies and television shows taking place in outer space. She considers Rey Mysterio to be her biggest influence, but she also considers Trish Stratus and Lita to be some of her main influences as well. Notes: While he trained in Mexico with the attention of giving his style an authentic lucha libre feel, he almost exclusively watched WWE growing up and considers Eddie Guerrero, Chris Jericho, and Rey Mysterio to be his primary influences. He eventually got the attention of WWE and signed a developmental contract. He struck up a rapport with Evan Marceau, Leon Santos, and Curtis King collectively known as the The Thrill Seekers and joined them. He participated in numerous completions throughout the country. Hayes is a lifelong pro wrestling fan but never considered pursuing it until a friend suggested that he attend a WWE tryout. He was surprised when he was offered a developmental contract. Despite a friendly demeanor he quickly developed a reputation as a “monster” due to his size and power. His time in NXT has been short-lived, but the prospects for him look pretty good. Notes: He is a biker and is part of motorcycle club called the Longhorn Cycle Club. He wears the groups jacket on his way to the ring. He considers Big Show, Undertaker, and Kane to be his primary influences. Coming from a military family she joined the U.S. Marine Corps after high school. After her enlistment ended she pursued a career in bodybuilding and fitness modeling. She still watched wrestling and would also travel to nearby indie shows. Because of her tall, athletic build she was mistaken for a wrestler on a few occasions. By chance one of her fitness competitions took place in Florida within a few days of a WWE tryout. After the competition she took part in the try out and managed to earn a developmental deal, but with no prior experience it was a while before she began appearing on NXT live events or on NXT shows. Once she got her opportunity to begin performing she quickly began to impress with her athleticism and explosive offense. She’s even had a few title opportunities but always came up short. She’s been working on refining her skills in order to change that. Notes: Reeves original attire was American themed, but over time she changed it to look more and more Amazonian. Despite this she still calls herself the All-American Amazon and uses the twitter handle @AmericanAmazon. She is someone who is known to have numerous eclectic interests and beliefs, despite this she is also known to be very disciplined. She began training to become a wrestler in lieu of attending university and began taking bookings immediately after completing training. While she enjoyed working in Europe she jumped at the opportunity to work in the United States. Being a fan of WWE she saw working in the States as an opportunity to get noticed by WWE. She would go on to sign a developmental deal with WWE and has recently debuted on NXT. Notes: Draven has as strong interest in the supernatural, though the extent of this interest is unclear. Any attempt to question her on it is met with obfuscation. Draven has cited Undertaker and Kane as her favorite wrestlers, but stylistically she looks more towards Austin Aries, A.J. Styles, and John Morrison. Despite being a self-described card-carrying villain she abstains from cheating as a demonstration of her discipline and superiority. Because she got into wrestling late in life she doesn’t really cite anyone in particular as an influence to her style. She's been through five or six different looks since 2K17. Carlos Ramirez El perfecto oportunista Character Information: Hometown: Harlem, New York Height: 6’ Weight: 215 lbs. Alignment: Heel Affiliation: The Cartel Athletic Background: Amateur Wrestling Style: Brawler Signature Moves: Running Front Chop Block 2, El Empalador (Impaler DDT 2) Finishing Moves: Sin Suerte (Lucky 13), Frog Splash 3 Character Information: Carlos Ramirez was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His father was professional wrestler, albeit and unsuccessful one. His family relocated to New York when he was ten, settling in Spanish Harlem. He intended to follow in his father’s footsteps, but his father didn’t approve of his career choice, so he resorted on his cousin, Victor to provide assistance with getting him into the industry. Along with his best friend, Anthony he began training at Victor’s former school. After completing their training Victor got them a tryout at Performance Center and once they made it to television they formed The Cartel. While Victor pursued the NXT Championship Carlos and Anthony began to pursue the NXT Tag Team Championship. Notes: Carlos is bilingual, fluent in Spanish and English. Carlos has no qualms about cheating. Not because he feels that it’s necessary, but he gets a thrill out of seeing what he can get away with. Despite being very strategic and athletic he is very opportunistic. In fact his nickname “El perfecto oportunista” translates to “The Perfect Opportunist.” Carlos considers Eddie Guerrero, Chris Jericho and Edge to be his primary influences and considers Ric Flair to be his idol. He played football throughout high school and earned an athletic scholarship to college. Unfortunately an injury ended his collegiate career, unable to afford school he dropped out and became bouncer after he recovered. His best friend Carlos told him that they should pursue wrestling and that his cousin, Victor could hook them up. Anthony jumped at the opportunity. After completing their training Victor got them a tryout at Performance Center and once they made it to television they formed The Cartel. While Victor pursued the NXT Championship Carlos and Anthony began to pursue the NXT Tag Team Championship. Notes: Anthony is of Italian descent and is the only member of the Cartel with no Hispanic ancestry. Anthony cites Goldberg and Batista as his primary influences. Anthony initially didn’t plan on using the Spear as his finishing move as he thought it would be cliché, but after quickly dispatching an opponent with it he decided to continue using it. Unlike his partner he abstains from cheating during matches, feeling that the way he’s build it isn’t necessary. Brian McCarthy The Bostonian Badass Character Information: Hometown: Boston, Massachusetts Height: 6'2" Weight: 245 lbs. Alignment: Face Affiliation: The Red Faction Athletic Background: Amateur wrestling Style: Powerhouse Signature Moves: Celtic Cross (Air Raid Siren), Spinebuster 5* Finishing Moves: Diving Elbow Drop 7, Celtic Cutter (Pop-up Cutter)* *Subject to change Clarence Powell The Windy City Warrior Character Information: Hometown: Chicago, Illinois Height: 6'1" Weight: 242 lbs. Alignment: Face Affiliation: The Red Faction Athletic Background: Amateur wrestling Style: Powerhouse Signature Moves: Pumphandle Suplex 3, Spinebuster 7 Finishing Moves: Powell Bomb (Spinning Powerbomb), Cyclone Kill (Discus Big Boot) Team Background: McCarthy and Powell are veterans of the United States Army. The two met each other while they were serving and bonded over several common interests, one of which just happened to be professional wrestling. Both of them aspired to become wrestlers themselves and discussed the possibility of becoming a tag team. After the two of them were discharged they sought out training and intentionally trained to have similar styles. The two went in for WWE tryout immediately after completing their training. They spent a great deal of time training in the Performance Center honing their skills and improving the coordination and continuity between their techniques. The two of them spent the last year doing live events and only recently have been brought on to TV. Notes: Despite being called “The Rangers” the two of them were not Army Rangers. They intended to call themselves McCarthy & Powell, but management gave them this name instead. McCarthy considers Randy Savage to be his all-time favorite wrestler and uses his Elbow Drop as one of his finishers. Other influences include Steve Austin and Diamond Dallas Page.
