What makes a GOAT

So I just watched this:

https://youtu.be/6EAm1WCXJoE

And it made me think what criteria do you end to hit to be labelled one of the greatest of all time?

This goes for any forms of media and entertainment.

Is it down to the persons thought process itself or does it need to actually have a criteria?

One example I will use are The Beatles. They didn't invent there genre but are known as one of the best bands/artists of all time. People who don't like them can they still recognise their status and regard them as a GOAT or do you need to enjoy the artist to also label them?

For me I'm not a heavy metal fan but I can see how good Metallica were and I could label them the greatest of all time in there particularly field, but that's just me.

For me it goes down for:

Actual quality

Impact on there particular field

Mainstream success

Longevity

I agree on most accounts other than longevity. Whilst I wouldn't consider a 'flash in the pan' for GOAT, I don't think they/it necessarily needs to actively exist for too long.

How long would you say?

Like for me Heath Ledger couldn't be in the conversation for GOAT due to his time.

Depends on what category of GOAT. GOAT actors? Certainly not, but Jokers? Absolutely.

I'm not really sure how long because that's not really up to me. I also think it's a case by case situation and what medium it's in.

Judas Priest are definitely considered one of the GOAT metal bands and they do have longevity on their side. Whereas Nirvana were only around/were huge mainstream successes for a handful of years.

I wanted just your view on how long really.

That's a interesting take on actors/character on Heath Ledger.

I don't think time is necessarily a good indicator of how to judge if someone is an all-time great. Nirvana is a prime example, or Jimi Hendrix. Both were around roughly the same amount of time, maybe 4 or 5 years but during that time they were at the top of their respective world, beating out their contemporaries in the process. The fact they left us so soon didn't really give them enough time to mess up or start to suck like others that stuck around too long.

And I gave you my view. My view is that it's a case-by-case basis.

It depends. Person we think isn't that great could be considered one of the greatest of all times decades down the road. An actor that was considered the greatest of all time back then could be considered overrated and decent to us. It depends on the time and lasting work they left. James Dean is considered one of the GOAT because of the impact his three movies had on a generation, and how he supposedly spoke to their feelings with Rebel With a Cause. Elvis Presley would be considered GOAT in rock 'n' roll, if not as a singer in general, because he created (?) the genre and made it enormous. Charles Dickens could be one of the GOAT writers because he wrote several novels that are classics and still popular and widely known, especially A Christmas Carol.

However, Stephenie Meyer wrote one of the most popular and bestselling series, but we don't consider her even close to good because her work sucks. It'd only be the fans that'd consider her series any good. And yet, decades from now, maybe Meyer's work will become classics, and she'll be considered a great writer.
