Las Vegas strip shooting: More than 20 dead, 100 injured after gunman opens fire near Mandalay Bay casino

Good Morning America KARMA ALLEN and EMILY SHAPIRO 3 minutes 25 seconds ago

More than 20 people were killed and 100 injured when what appears to be a lone gunman opened fire from a perch high up in the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas Sunday night, police said.

The "nonstop gunfire," according to one witness, sent bystanders outside the resort on the Vegas strip ducking for cover and scrambling for their lives. Tourists hid in their hotel rooms and flights headed into the McCarran International Airport were held elsewhere.

Bystanders sprang into action, caring for the wounded and at least one described someone dying in their arms.

One video showed the terrifying aftermath as the injured lay on stretchers or on the ground with responders and bystanders surrounding them to give aid. Bystanders made makeshift stretchers out of police barricades, plugged wounds with their hands and used their clothing to try to stanch the bleeding from the wounded.

Videos filmed by onlookers gave a window into the chaos that ensued, with some thinking that fireworks were going off. The final night of the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival was taking place across the street from Mandalay Bay. Jason Aldean was the night's headliner; other performers included country stars Jake Owen, Big & Rich, Luke Combs and Dylan Scott.

In the wake of the shooting, the Las Vegas Police Department said the suspected gunman, who was believed to be a local resident, was on 32nd floor of Mandalay Bay hotel. Police responded to the scene, engaged him and he is now dead. Officials said they did not believe there were any more shooters.

Authorities were looking for a companion of the shooter, Marilou Danley, as well as two vehicles, a Hyundai Tucson with Nevada license plate 114B40 and a Chrysler Pacifica Touring with Nevada license plate 79D401.

"We were just at the concert there, and Jason Aldean was playing," one of the concertgoers, named Mike Cronk, 48, a retired teacher, told ABC News. "Kinda sounded like some fireworks going off. I think there was the first kinda volley, and then all of the sudden second volley. My buddy's like 'I just got hit, ya know.' He got hit three times. Then people started diving for the ground. And it just continued."

"It was pretty much chaotic," Cronk continued. "Lots of people got hit. ...It took a while to get him out. We had to get him over the fence and hiding under the stage for a while, ya know, to be safe. And finally we had to move him because he had three chest wounds."

Cronk said his group were finally able to track down an ambulance "and basically the one guy ended up dying in my arms because he was bleeding," he said. "And my buddy got in there. We got three more people in the ambulance. ... But I just got a message from my buddy -- and he's going to be okay."

As bursts of gunfire crackled in the air, people outside of the casino ducked and screamed, according to video filmed by witnesses.

"We're going to get trampled if we don't go," a bystander could be heard saying in a dramatic video of the incident. Confusion appeared to abound as those outside fled the scene with another person saying, "it's fireworks."

Michelle Leonard, who was located in a booth near the main entrance of the arena, said the shooting just kept going nonstop.

Leonard said mass confusion unfolded as people tried to flee the scene. She said the shooting seemed like it went on for more than a minute.

I had no idea of where it was coming from or where to run to," Leonard said.

She said she injured her leg as she tried to escape.

Another witness, Jake Freeman, said he was standing on the rooftop of a nearby hotel when the shooting broke out.

I had a birds-eye view of the shooting, Freeman said in a phone interview with ABC News. He said he saw "crowds of people running as people dropped to the ground.

At the moment we didnt realize that they were being shot, he said.

Aldean, who performed at the country concert Sunday night, wrote on Instagram, "Tonight has been beyond horrific. I still dont know what to say but wanted to let everyone know that Me and my Crew are safe. My Thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved tonight. It hurts my heart that this would happen to anyone who was just coming out to enjoy what should have been a fun night."

An official with McCarran International Airport said "an airport perimeter fence near the concert venue was breached by people fleeing the scene of the incident."

"Airport staff responded and have transported those people to the designated evacuation site," the officials said. "The fence line is once again secured."

Flights in and out of the McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas were temporarily halted due to the incident.

ATF agents have responded to the scene and the FBI is assisting with the investigation. The FBI is also supporting local law enforcement efforts in Las Vegas.

Mandalay Bay Resort tweeted, "Our thoughts & prayers are with the victims of last night's tragic events. Were grateful for the immediate actions of our first responders."

The resort said in a statement that "law enforcement requested that we put hotels in the vicinity on lockdown to ensure guest safety."

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval tweeted, "A tragic & heinous act of violence has shaken the #Nevada family. Our prayers are w/ the victims & all affected by this act of cowardice."

"Pray for Las Vegas," Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman said via Twitter. "Thank you to all our first responders out thherr

Sheriff Joe Lombardo, when asked by a reporter if it was an act of terrorism, said no, not at this point. We believe it was a local individual. He resides here locally. We dont know what his belief system was at this time. Right now we believe he is the sole aggressor at this point and the scene is static.

Yeah Im an idiot. Id rather be an idiot that thinks gun control is non existent in America than a *censored*ing idiot that believes 50 lost lives are acceptable to keep my precious guns.

How many of those terrorist attacks in England involved guns?

Oh its up to 50 dead now. And cue the outside idiots comments about guns like the idiot above me ^ what does England do about guns ? How about all the terror attacks there lately. But hey who cares about England.

This guy^ says "who cares" about a country in a thread about a mass shooting. *censored*ing disgusting! You should be ashamed.

We delegate and control our guns so the trained have them. We don't have stores selling them to every fat moron off the street with a screw loose in his mind.

It's *censored*ing ridiculous and you're killing your own country with them. "Who cares about England?" Well we've had guns for centuries longer than America and never once has there been a mass shooting. Go figure.

I feel so sorry for everyone in your country who don't agree with the civil use of them. And these victims.

You are a *censored*ing *Censored* and a scumbag.

Honestly, this shit will never change because far too many Americans care more about the owning guns than the safety of their friends and family.

Condolenses for all the victims but this was far too easy for him to mow down a load of people with your *censored*ed up gun laws.

I'm not surprised this is the way YOU respond when I remember how much of a dick you are on topics less serious than this.

50 people are dead and 200 are injured, and this happens way too often in OUR country, so yes the "what to do about guns" discussion will happen because it is a legitimate conversation to have. Your first instinct is to protect guns when you hear the news of 50 people being wiped out having fun at a concert all because a sick human being had the ammunition to inflict as much damage as he wanted?

Just ONE guy did more damage with one gun as the guy in London who bombed the Ariana Grande concert. Think about that. "Who cares about England?" get the *Censored* outta here.

Have a word with yourself mate. *censored*ing hell.

Anyway, it's awful that things like this are becoming the norm now. Thoughts are with everyone affected x

Why is he being reported? His "who cares about England" was as sarcastic as Shindol saying "Who gives a shit if all these innocent people lost their lives". The only mistake he made was responding to Shindol and calling him an idiot instead of just ignoring him.

Everyone is so quick to turn this an agenda. RIP to those who died. There is very little we know right now and I'll wait untill all the information comes out to respond further.

This is how I feel and its really sad, like everytime I see a situation like this, I just say "America". Its kinda scary that its just becoming the normal here.

RIP to all those murdered. Too bad the guy in office is too busy worrying about players taking knees than real situations.

He's reported because he called Shindol an idiot and was the one responsible for 'turning it into an agenda'. It was a post in poor taste over something so tragic and it shouldn't be left unpunished.

The debate on gun control became pointless when innocent children being killed by guns couldn't stop gun lovers from agreeing that we do need stricter gun control. I just don't see a point in talking about this when there are idiots whose logic is that more people having more guns is good/safer, especially at sporting events. Newtown was the perfect platform to talk about gun control.

This was a violence that never should have happened. I hope the victims can rest in peace.

The problem is that he has blatantly tried winding up another user of the website, something he has a track record for now.

I saw a comment that sums it up. "I lost all my hope for gun control laws when Sandy Hook happened. 20 kids died and the nation collectively said, '*Censored* em. They're not taking my guns'"

This country is too damn proud and stubborn sometimes. RIP to the victims

Sums up the right wing logic, basically

https://twitter.com/BlunderingIdiom/status/628469905038438401

We do need to ban automatic rifles, or anything bigger than hand guns, along with stricter laws on buying hand guns. All staying silent will do is create more and more victims. But then again, most politicians likely won't do anything as long as they get funding from NRA and the gun industry.
