The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told Reuters on Tuesday that it had "confirmed information" that Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has been killed.

The report came just days after the last sectors of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, which Baghdadi's forces overran almost exactly three years ago, were recaptured by the Iraqi army.

Russia's Defense Ministry said in June that it might have killed Baghdadi when one of its air strikes hit a gathering of Islamic State commanders on the outskirts of the Syrian city of Raqqa, but Washington said it could not corroborate the death and Western and Iraqi officials have been skeptical.

Reuters could not independently verify Baghdadi's death.

"(We have) confirmed information from leaders, including one of the first rank who is Syrian, in the Islamic State in the eastern countryside of Deir al-Zor," Rami Abdulrahman, director of the British-based war monitoring group, told Reuters.

Abdulrahman said he had been told by Islamic State sources that Baghdadi had died, "but they did not specify when." The sources said Baghdadi had in the past three months been present in the eastern Syrian countryside around Deir al-Zor.

Tbh, they could say they killed some dude named Shaba Zima Don Zhul, and I wouldn't know if they were telling the truth or not. Either way, maybe people can stop losing their shit about ISIS now. I'm so incredibly relieved (sarcasm) to know that the threat is officially gone. World peace, sunshine, rainbows, and all that jazz...until the next brand of terrorism pops up (since that will always happen). But, hell...people need a name to claim that they conquered.

To be fair they always say they kill someone but they never actually show proof that he's dead I mean American said they kill multiple terrorist leaders but no proof ever came from it

I'm pretty sure it matters a lot to the people that live in Mosul and the surrounding area. Sure, it's not gonna stop terrorism in the west but we aren't the only people that are harmed by the idea or organisation that is IS. A city was liberated from those *censored*s and that's a good thing. I don't see why there's negativity in this thread. If a hostile group had occupied New York or London and the military had just defeated them, you'd all be buzzing ya tits off right now.

I don't get the cynicism... Russians have supposedly killed Abu Bakr in one of the bombings, but couldn't get the confirmation only through intelligence. Nobody could. But with this...it says that it's almost certain that the dude died in recent months. And with the liberation of Mosul this is no small blow by any chance. Nobody is saying that it's all good now and the threat is over... And yes, they ...ISIS... is/was an idea and relied heavily on ideology to radicalize more people, but it's also a fully fledged organisation with heavy finnances (by raiding, funding and whatnot)... so objectivly, will they now having a much harder time to bring people over or oparate on the level they used to? It's not really that debatable imo. But of course new laeders could emmerge and the story continues and so on... like with Al-Qaeda, but it will be very much different now. So yeah, these recent news are a very good thing, and a big blow if it's true. Is it over? Not in the slightest, especially when you take in the consideration how Middle East will obviously still be a battleground of another proxy wars, changing goverments and the usual geopilitics stuff.

I'm completely okay with ISIS leaders dying. Plus, competent leaders dying is a good thing. Makes it harder to carry out successful plans and/or recruit/brainwash people.
