Original WrestleMania plans involving Undertaker, Styles and Cena

According to Sportsdeeda, John Cena proposing to Nikki Bella at WrestleMania 33 drastically changed original plans for the PPV.

As we noted several months before WrestleMania 33, the plan in WWE was to have John Cena vs The Undertaker take place at ‘Mania in Orlando, however that match ended up being scrapped in favor of Nikki Bella and John Cena vs The Miz and Maryse, and The Undertaker vs Roman Reigns.

The idea for Cena to propose to Nikki Bella actually came from WWE Exec Kevin Dunn, who pitched it to Vince McMahon. McMahon then spent several weeks pitching the idea to Cena, and it’s being said Cena was originally not a fan of the idea. When Cena finally agreed to do the proposal, he was given a brief WWE Title run which ended when Bray Wyatt won the Title at WWE Elimination Chamber. Initial Royal Rumble plans called for AJ Styles to drop the title to The Undertaker, who would then drop the title back to Styles at Elimination Chamber. Cena was originally supposed to eliminate The Dead Man from the chamber match, setting up their WrestleMania 33 bout.

I can imagine Dunn raising his hand after the original idea was pitched like "How about instead of doing that, we do nothing like that whatsoever? AND...and hear me out...we pressure Cena into making a personal life decision?" and of course Vince likes *censored*ing around with people's personal lives so he agreed.

y'all complaining about matches we should've got but I just lol'd at the fact that Cena declined the idea of him proposing his own girlfriend but did it in the end anyways. How is Nikki fine with this lmao

Yeah that was the funniest thing, Although I'd like to believe that Cena was truthful at Mania when he told her he'd marry her one day - he was pretty notorious around that time for not wanting to remarry.

So they also basically gave Cena the title as an ego favour for proposing on TV? Man did AJ choose the wrong time to have the title.

Kevin Dunn is the true eater of worlds.

Not surprised with those teeth. (apparently now I have to say it's a joke - cheers King Ross)

Lmao at the title run being why he proposed. Also means I was probably right about it being kayfabe.

Also Cena and Taker should've stood their ground about fighting each other

We would've gotten John Cena and The Undertaker. We would've gotten the one marquee match that WWE did not book......yet. Sure Taker didn't have the streak anymore but hell, fans would've loved to see Cena vs Taker.

And because of this beaver looking bitch, we got their precious Cinderella/P.R. moment for Total Divas/Total Bellas while Roman Reigns beats Taker and WWE refuses to read the space between their ears by not turning him heel when they had the chance.

The sooner Kevin Dunn is outta here, hopefully the better the product might get.

Oh yeah and apparently, Shinsuke Nakamura was gonna be Daniel Bryan's opponent of choice for The Miz at WrestleMania 33 as well. Think about that.

Cena could have still proposed to Nikki, the following night on RAW after he retired the Undertaker. Hell if I was Cena I'd have chosen the Taker match over proposing to Nikki, he could always propose some other day but that was Takers final match!

I think the 16th title run was more important to him, seems that's what convinced him to do it.
