Power Rangers - 2017 Thread

"We're creating, or I should say re-imagining, the world in a cool, updated, contemporary, really fun way."

That's what Power Rangers director Dean Israelite told us about the reboot when we talked to him last June. At that stage, though, he'd only been on the project for a few weeks. Now that it's actually filming, we're starting to get glimpses of what he meant by that. We've seen Elizabeth Banks' villainous Rita Repulsa and now, thanks to EW, we've got our first shot of the new rangers and their suits.

They all have a glowing light in their chest and have traded out the kids' show's iconic spandex for a hardened, shiny look, so it's tough to think these weren't heavily influenced by Iron Man. On the flip side, the suits were kind of incidental on the original show. They weren't really worn as armor, they basically just hid everyone's identities. This time around they look far, far more battle ready.

Now we just need to wait and see what they're actually going to battle while wearing those things. Rita Repulsa's new look isn't quite so armored up, so it's a safe bet that the monsters that fight for her will be.

And if you want to see the young men and women underneath those suits, here's Becky G as Yellow Ranger Trini, Ludi Lin as Black Ranger Zack, Dacre Montgomery as Red Ranger Jason, Naomi Scott as Pink Ranger Kimberly, and RJ Cyler as Blue Ranger Billy.

Power Rangers hits theaters on March 24, 2017. If you head to EW, you can read a bit more about how the new design works.

I love Elizabeth Banks but not sold on this look of Rita right now. The new suits look cool though. I guess they'll still allow fast movement and martial arts even though they are suits of armor.

Looks shitty.

Original series was cool because it was intentionally all low budget and shit. This will suffer the same fate that the new Godzilla movies suffer; It's just not one of those things that transitions well to all the bells and whistles of modern movies. Power Rangers needs to be a complete joke in order to be any good.

I've been excited about this movie since they announced it, but I was way too lazy to make a topic for it. The costumes in this movie are radical changes. I wasn't feeling Rita's costume at first, but I think the green ranger motifs are pretty interesting. I don't like the Ranger costumes, to be honest, but I still have hope that the movie will be good. I hope it'll be a big blockbuster that rejuvenates the franchise in the mainstream, and no doubt Saban wants that too.

I made this imgur album for comparison...

I was expecting them updated and changed, but I was expecting something that looks more like the 1995 movie suits, which looked more like armor than the show's spandex, maybe updated with some new glowy lights or something.

Yeah I was hoping for a bit more campy. Love the classic suits better.

Oh god no. Those suits have dark and edgy written all over them. Power Rangers are not supposed to be dark and edgy. Why does everything need to be made dark and edgy?

Because Nolan made it successfull with his Batmantrilogy and now many movies try to also do that with their franchises

 I'm pretty sure Batman was dark from the very beginning, so it makes sense for that. At this point, I won't be surprised if friggin Teletubbies or Cliford get a dark and edgy reboot. Then there's the rumored live action Pokemon movie.

I think that you guys are assuming too much from a picture at this point.

They even mention that the movie is supposed to be aimed at mature audiences. Power Rangers is a kids franchise.

There's a middleground here that you're completely ignoring. Almost anything is gonna be more mature and darker than the original series by default. The original series was made for babies.

There's alot of movies that get announced and I'm just like "Noooooo, my childhood! What have you done!?!?!?!"

This one, though, I'm really looking forward too. I was also thinking the suits would've been more like minor tweaks to the original show, but after the Rita reveal I should've known better. They look pretty cool, albeit a little too '10s robotics. It fits this certain trend of this decade and I'm not the biggest fans of trends. I hope the suits aren't completely CGI though. I'm sure they're gonna have to be heavily generated to pull off the alien look as I expect the blue lines, chest piece, and morpher sections to pulsate, not just do the Tony Stark solid light thing.

You guys seen this?

When they announced they were rebooting the movie I was instantly turned off. And then I saw that fanfilm and thought "They don't have to make it LIKE this, but I'll gladly watch an official reboot movie [series] if they were gonna shake things up a bit" and from Rita ditching the witch getup to the armored suits where only Tommy previously had one (though not full body), it seems like they will.

This might not be the best movie. Hell it might not even be an okay movie, but it definitely has my attention more so than any Turtles, GI, Transformers, Ghostbusters, Chipmonks, Scooby Doo, Jem(da feck?) etc shows from my childhood has ever had.

I've been wondering how the rest of the Rita costume looked since the People article. You can see the full body here . And the homie Goldar coming back(as a full CGI character, which is fine)?

Bruh...
