Why TV Ratings Aren’t As Important to WWE Now

– Vince McMahon noted during today’s Fourth Quarter 2015 earnings call that the company isn’t as worried about TV ratings like they once were.

An investor asked about WWE TV ratings being down for several quarters now and Vince said the ratings are down but not as much as other programming on the networks they work with. Vince talked about how people aren’t watching TV as much as they used to. Vince said TV is still extremely important to WWE but when you add in their digital and social content, their audience is consuming content when they want to and how they want to. Vince said that is important to WWE.

Vince added that WWE is not just about TV ratings anymore. He acknowledged that the company used to “live and die by” ratings but that was before the era of new media.

What are you guys even talking about? We have ALWAYS complained that they are too into ratings and hotshot stuff like a Cena return + title win just to boost ratings. With less focus on them, they'll potentially invest time and endure low periods to build new stars and actually have the patience to not cancel everything after a month of low ratings.

I mean, yeah, WWE is completely idiotic and they'll probably do none of the crap I just wrote but now the environment is at least given.

Vince is bsing the real reason is because there's no competition hammering away at possibly putting them out of work so they can pretty much do whatever.

Until McMahon retires. Than the new person whether it be Triple H or by some strange reason someone else they will want to prove them self I'd imagine.

He's just trying to put a positive spin on it. TV ratings are still huge to them, they've just got more sources of revenue now than ever before.

However clearly the USA network are happy otherwise they wouldn't have moved Smackdown over. If they thought they could get dropped then they'd worry. America is their key market and wrestling isn't popular enough to run in its biggest market without TV. More eyes on the product means more merch sales and more network subscribers, more sponsors. That's why ratings are vital.

This 100%. Vince is crazy if he thinks that ratings don't matter and he's also crazy if he thinks that we will believe that ratings don't matter to him.

Anyone who's interested in this and why WWE should and do still care about their TV ratings, read this article: http://www.pwtorch.com/site/2015/12/05/keller-low-raw-ratings-are-a-bad-thing-they-count/

I think the game is different now. Now they are in a position to make sure competition never even presents itself.

I like watching NXT, but that's not some Triple H's project/plan because he "sees the future of wrestling", it's giving in a minimum way what competition already is doing. Buying out more indy stars, taking a huge chunk of NJPW stars...it's not because they have suddenly seen the light since CM Punk and Daniel Bryan became so popular in WWE, otherwise they wouldn't have be doing what they are doing with Reigns.

It's all just WWE business as a company, that's it. This last glimpses of meeting we got to read, just confirms me all that.

having said all that, I still like to watch WWE from time to time, I watch the PPVs and most of NXT, haven't watched Smackdown in a while (except when Renaldo debuted), and RAW occasionally. The thing is they will never see money from me...because I'm broke, and I'm from Croatia, so their services aren't exactly available here...

All it takes is rearranging of timeslots for popular shows, and WWE would be faced with major competitions.

It's such a different age now. I remember the Monday night wars and how it was so crucial. PWI having the ratings posted monthly. It brought such intrigue and you really never knew who may show up where. Now that i sound like a old man telling battle stories?..

I think media breaks apart in so many different ways now, between social media and streaming, that TV ratings as a whole are starting to mean nothing. I can't tell you the last time I watched something on a network broadcast, but I can catch Flash, supernatural, Brooklyn 99 and all of the other shows I watch on HULU or the like(Raw and Smackdown cuts included)

I am on the fence what this means for WWE story wise. I would hope they would use now as a chance to truly develop interesting characters and storylines, but I unfortunately feel we will see more of the same. Which is really disappointing with the vast talent roster as their disposal. I do hope I'm wrong though,

People may be watching their shows on apps and things, but they're still watching the product. Ratings might not matter, but putting out a quality show does...whether it's on the USA network, or a comcast app playing the USA network, or on Hulu. You can't just stop worrying about being good for the sake of tv numbers being less important. And I don't buy that anyway. Television still pulls consistently strong numbers with other shows.

Of course TV ratings matter. That's what determines how much advertisers pay you, and it also comes up when you re-negotiate your deal with USA. He's just putting a positive spin on a negative problem.

Ask the NFL if TV ratings still matter.. they also have live attendance ticket sales, merchandise sales, the NFL Network subscriptions, etc. But their ratings are so high, they can charge over a million dollars for a 30 second Super Bowl commercial.

Exactly. If they just do the bare minimum on Raw because TV ratings don't matter anymore, then pretty soon the Network subs will go down, merch & ticket sales will go down, etc.

So this doesn't mean that they're gonna stop caring about putting on a good weekly show. At most, it might mean less of those obvious ratings ploys like Mr. McMahon coming back, and that weird segment when they told people that Lesnar (I think it was) would be showing up at halftime of the Monday Night Football game.
