People hate them because they're jealous they can't be great like the Yankees. Yankees earned their wins and success.

Doesn't matter why they hate them. The fact is, contrary to what you said, they're not America's team. America hates them. lol

I feel like...(as someone who doesn't even watch baseball), I do agree with the assessment that the Yankees are "America's team". Loved or hated...they feel synonymous with the USA more than any other baseball team...(or even sports team in general). I think that's what the intended meaning of "being America's team" was/is. When you think of the USA, and you think of sports teams...I'm pretty sure the Yankees are the very first name that pops into your head. When I hear the word "baseball", I think of the Yankees, crackerjacks, and hotdogs.

If we ask non-Americans which baseball teams they have heard of, what do you think they'll say?

I don't think it matters. I think you have a different interpretation on what "America's Team" means than I do.

I have several interpretations. I still consider the Yankees America's team even if they're hated. Though they might not be anymore if they don't even get to the World Series anymore.

Does that mean the Lakers are America's team for basketball too?

Nah, probably has to be the Warriors right now. Lakers haven't been good in years.

Bulls or Lakers for basketball and Yankees or Red Sox for baseball.

Don't the Yankees suck too?

Besides, the way you guys were talking, I thought it was mostly about mainstream hype and relevance.

They're in the same boat as Manchester United, most liked+most hated due to success. Everyone knows who they are so they're the "British" team, I guess.

*Censored* United tho

Arsenal's been shit since 2011. But in general, Manchester United is the New York Yankees of the Premier League. The franchise. The money makers. The biggest brand of the league.

We were CL-contenders, reached a CL-final and title contenders in those years and played some of the best football in Europe. Since 2011, we've played like shit, got humiliated in Europe, dropped out of the top-4 and haven't gotten close to the title. Yeah, 3 FA Cups are nice, but our level has dropped dramatically in the same period, it's not even funny.
