"Microsoft needs to lay seeds for its cloud-centric strategy and Windows 10 is the epicenter of that strategy. It's all about making it attractive for the ecosystem to upgrade onto this next-generation platform."

Windows 10, expected on the market this autumn, will be available for one year as a free upgrade to users of Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1, Myerson said.

Windows 10 and Xbox One will interact in a variety of ways, including streaming Xbox One games to the Windows 10 PCs and tablets in your home, according to announcements made by Head of Xbox Phil Spencer at today's Microsoft event. In a live demo, Forza Horizon 2 streamed from an Xbox One to a Microsoft Surface. Streaming will require a one time set up to establish a relationship between the devices, after which Xbox One games can be accessed on a Windows 10 device by clicking on the game's name in the Windows 10 Xbox App.

So they skipped 9 or

I think they decided that the latest update was so large that it surpassed 9...or something like that. But, yes...yes they did. Kind of like how they made the third Xbox the "One".

And holograms...because, *Censored* it:

I like 7 so I would hope 10 is good. Like, I remember Vista being one of the biggest pieces of shit of all time.

I don't know about 7...but I like 8.1 quite a bit. I have it on both my PC and my phone...and the Xbox One looks and functions very similarly as well. I assume that 10 will basically be like 8.1, but with improved functionality.

10 is pretty good from the short amount of time I've had to play around with it. If anyone is interested in it's design, it's like Windows 7, but with Windows 8 type tiles built into the Start Menu. Seems like they took the best thing from 7 and 8, and pulled it into one.

The streaming thing is cool as *Censored*.

Actually from what I heard it had to do with old programming from the Windows 95 and 98 days. Some programs would check for the version of Windows by only looking for the first number. So a program checking for Windows 98 would search "Windows 9" well now has come to the time that we actually have a Windows 9 so they just went to 10 to skip has troubles it might cause.

Windows 10 does look pretty great though. Take everything that was good from Win 7 and add the couple things good in Windows 8 and there you go.

*Update

Users who have pirated versions of Windows 7 or 8 will still be getting Windows 10 for free, but it might not work as well:

"We have always been committed to ensuring that customers have the best Windows experience possible. With Windows 10, although non-Genuine PCs may be able to upgrade to Windows 10, the upgrade will not change the genuine state of the license. Non-Genuine Windows is not published by Microsoft. It is not properly licensed, or supported by Microsoft or a trusted partner. If a device was considered non-genuine or mislicensed prior to the upgrade, that device will continue to be considered non-genuine or mislicensed after the upgrade. According to industry experts, use of pirated software, including Non-Genuine Windows, results in a higher risk of malware, fraud (identity theft, credit card theft, etc), public exposure of your personal information, and a higher risk for poor performance or feature malfunctions."

If you're going to be a pirate (Arrrgghhh) than you are better off starting with Windows 7 and than upgrading to 10. Microsoft made changes in Windows 8 that made pirating much harder and made it more difficult to receive things like updates. You didn't have that problem in Windows 7.

I dunno, my copy of Windows 7 still is awesome and I'm not seeing any real reason to upgrade unless windows plans to drop all support for 7 right away, which they'd be stupid to do.
