The Progressive Rock/Metal Thread.

Recommended Posts

It's cool, I know what you are thinking...

Pump ya breaks Sold13r, we already have threads for this music... Why have a Progressive rock & metal thread when there exists rock and metal threads?

Simple, because the addition of the adjective progressive changes things. Dream Theater is most certainly a metal band, but it does seem more than a bit odd to have them follow Dying Fetus, Immortal, or Kreator in the official metal thread. It's just a matter of the prog oriented stuff seeming out of place. On the flip side, prog rock from Genesis to Porcupine Tree just seems a little too classy to share space with bands like Nickelback and Theory of a Deadman in the rock thread. Not trying to sound elitist, but it's true.

So this thead is for all things hard rock and heavy metal... pending that they have a progressive sound to them. You can also post jazz-fusion, experimental rock, avant-garde stuff here as well. Not Ambient though, Fried has a thread to fill those needs.

Also, my metal gauntlet is marching onward and the progressive metal section is coming up next. Please stop by those threads and vote.

I'll kick this off with something I feel represents the true nature of progress. This is a song (really a series of 4 songs) by King Crimson recorded in 4 parts on different records throughout their career. Meant to be one long song in concept, it represents an evolution of their sound over about 3 decades.

Nice one man.

Magma

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9A-gPOq1OQ

Magma is a French progressive rock band founded in Paris in 1969 by classically trained drummer Christian Vander, who claimed as his inspiration a "vision of humanity's spiritual and ecological future" that profoundly disturbed him. In the course of their first album, the band tells the story of a group of people fleeing a doomed Earth to settle on the planet Kobaïa. Later, conflict arises when the Kobaïans — descendants of the original colonists — encounter other Earth refugees. Vander invented a constructed language, Kobaïan, in which most lyrics are sung. In a 1977 interview with Vander and long-time Magma vocalist Klaus Blasquiz, Blasquiz said that Kobaïan is a "phonetic language made by elements of the Slavonic and Germanic languages to be able to express some things musically. The language has of course a content, but not word by word."[1] Vander himself has said that, "When I wrote, the sounds [of Kobaïan] came naturally with it – I didn’t intellectualise the process by saying "Ok, now I’m going to write some words in a particular language", it was really sounds that were coming at the same time as the music."[2] Later albums tell different stories set in more ancient times; however, the Kobaïan language remains an integral part of the music.

Awesome live performance.

I like to watch out for the newer stuff when it comes to progressive metal, myself. It kinda just fits with the progressive 'always one step ahead' state of mind. I've grown to think that Protest The Hero, SIkth, Animals As Leaders, and Propaghandi are 4 great progressive metal bands. They're stuff is just on the right side of progressive, where it doesn't just become a musical mash of "LOOK WHAT I CAN DO!", like what seems to happen with a lot of bands who try to do prog rock/metal.

I've listed some of my favorite tracks from each, if you want to give some new (or not) bands a listen.

Protest The Hero

Sikth

Animals As Leaders

Propaghandi

I'm not familiar with this French prog band Magma. That's why I'm glad to see you contribute Fried, because you always have some really unique and enticing sounds to share. Pretty cool that they created their own alien language. I can't see that sort of thing ever getting really popular, but that likely wasn't their true aim, plus we are talking about Europe... in the 1970's no less, so I could see something like that going over well. It's certainly innovative to this day even, and it is perhaps reminding me that I take lyrics a bit too seriously sometimes, since this song works with literal jibberish or at least with an indecipherable language to pretty much everyone.

I'm digging the ambient thread as well. I don't really know too many ambient artists myself but the thread is interesting none the less due to the discovery.

Some classic Rush and Yes from Mustaine is cool as well. My parents first introduced me to those bands a long time ago. It wasn't the only sort of music they listened to... far from it, but of the stuff they liked, it was what stuck with me.

TotallySam, I dig those bands too, well Propaghandi I haven't heard much of before, but I liked that track. The other 3 though will be in my Modern Progressive block of the tournament coming up soon.

I wanted to post my first metal gauntlet prog brackets up at the same time as this thread but I had to step out for awhile, so I just tossed it up now, rather late. Here is a Symphony X song I was half tempted to link in it's block, but I promised myself I would try to keep the links short (as in under 10 mins or so)

Yes, it is the Homeric tale of the Odyssey told through a Power metal song that totally throws fear of cheese to the wind as it sounds like theme music from a Japanese Role Playing Game (like Final Fantasy) mixed with some Dream Theater, but I'll be damned if it doesn't sound like awesome feels!

I've probably posted this next song at least three times in the rock thread, and nobody said anything. :(

Okay, now for everything else.

Tool

Cynic

Mastodon

Between the Buried and Me

Rush

King Crimson

I cleaned out my computer, so I'm very likely blanking on other bands I should have mentioned.

Nice choices. I'll have to keep in mind which ones you've listed here, as I want to use different songs in the gauntlet, to maximize exposure by using different tracks.

Orbs sounded pretty cool, I haven't heard of them before. I knew that Dan Briggs had a side project, but I didn't know much about it. Thanks for sharing it.

Check it out, the page on progarchives about Zeuhl, the genre Magma initially created, there are still Zeuhl bands popping up from time to time. I'm not familar with a lot of them but there's some interesting stuff there.

Thanks for this thread, made me get out my Yes record last night!

Huh! This Zeuhl thing is an entirely new thing to me. That's pretty cool that Magma influenced their own subgenre.

I just picked one of these bands at random to explore. Infernal Machina sounded badass. Turns out that is the album name by Jannick Top (don't have a clue what that means). But it's pretty cool. Quite repetitive, but certainly unique though.

Yeah, Yes is one of those bands who has two songs that get played on the radio, yet a wealth of great music in their catelog that is very diverse.

I was going to go through the trouble of explaining how all of these songs connect, but I figured it'd be much more fun to let you guys try. Come on, don't be lazy now. :shift:

Lyrics:

Lost Perfection: Coulrophobia

These hours seem like years.

I've been starting at this wall,

Wondering when it's going to take all of our lives.

I'm just glad we have jokes.

My eyes are slowly closing.

Boredom is causing this loss of interest.

When will I awake?

(My eyes are slowly closing)

Boredom is causing this loss of interest.

When will I awake? Asleep...

This party of four includes three grown adults and myself.

The first adult is shy and wise enough,

To keep the second one away from conversation.

They're on a mission.

Gender is not recognized.

The third adult is a male and talks too much.

The stench of shit is in the air.

The room storms with laughter.

Four turns to a hundred and the noise is unbearable.

"It's time, you are in hell, this place will kill itself soon!"

I cry, and the hands surround me.

Born into a hell, never wake to this.

I cry, and the hands surround me.

Born into a hell, never wake to this.

I have experienced nothing,

Yet I fell the only one who has not done harm.

If only I could understand how to change things.

I can't *censored*ing think.

The noise is unbearable.

I can't *censored*ing think.

The noise is unbearable.

The noise stops.

Lost Perfection: Anablephobia

Clowns now appear.

They're carrying knvies and cups of gasoline.

"Tonight is our death." then begin to slash each other.

Clowns now appear,

They're carrying knvies and cups of gasoline.

"Tonight is our death." the skies open up, the flames pour in.

The world watched in awe.

Mesmerize.

The skies open up, the flames pour in...

The world watched in awe.

Mesmerize.

Death is in the air.

The three adults once again start talking.

They ask questions of faith and love.

"We shall live past these days, rid of all we've done."

I see what they mean now,

But the wretched smell has overcome, I am gone...

The baby born with the end of the world.

Awake... Awake... Awake... Awake...

(The five of us haven't spoken in hours.

Sitting alone to our own thoughts.

Only we will know what strange things boredom has created.)

Lyrics:

Swim to the Moon

It's been a long night...away from it all

The grabbing authority of my peers...

The rusty cage that never seems to open...

When can I escape? When can I swim to the moon?

I've heard this expression my entire life...never realized how peaceful a statement really is.

All alone on the worlds waters...here I am.

The sun's slowly drifting past the edge of the world...(can't blame our ancestors)

I'm the loneliest boat on this entire body of water.

Rest will give my awakening purpose...this is why I have come here in the first place.

A peace I have never felt... a life I did not want to live.

I will awake through sleep...

The drifting drifter...look into the picture...

(The Foreshadowing)

No more panic, no more regret.

No more hoping for a new mess.

Slide into the water

Become one with the sea.

Life seems so much smaller.

Swim to the moon.

I awake with a cool breese blowing through my dirty hair. Rested, stable...a first.

A caffeine junkie's longest wish: peace and quiet...

No wake-ups, no expectations...A strange feeling...suddenly drifting...

This "as seen on t.v." anchor is just another lie I guess...

hoping for something not there. Filling a void that I can't quite put my finger on.

This loneliness I always seek. I'm in the middle of black water. No sign of human life in any direction...the most peaceful event of my life seems to have typically turned into a struggle. I'm in the middle of black water...no sign of human life. Panic takes over my body.

I have indeed floated due to a non-reversible decision to flee.

Just for a day I told myself...my survival skills were lost years ago

Here I am:no food, no clean water, and this extremely embarrassing attempt at a "get away outfit".

This is an inevitable death.

Slide into the water

Become one with the sea.

Life seems so much smaller.

Swim to the moon.

Look into the picture...(worry leaves my body)

This is what I lived to be. This very moment is the first time in my life that I've felt pure joy.

Slide into the water

Become one with the sea.

Life seems so much smaller.

Swim to the moon.

Lyrics:

Specular Reflection

Prospect #1

A twisted crash... vibrations forming my personal currency.

A lifeline... a sweatbox, the linear mind as one.

Who would have thought?

This distant face...

Distant life.. never before seen.

Deep sleep in deep sea. Nerves are torn from their ends.

It has been three nights and still the puzzle is cut by a shaky hand.

Carved out of improper materials... imperfect directions.

A crushing sound soon awakes. Where am I?

The taste of sand wipes away the grime of my past life...

The life I fled... the grip I loosened.

It has all caused an even pressure. The kind they show us on our screens.

I've become what I've force fed my entire life... a drifter's dream... a loner's mind.

Wanting what they have... their perfect smiles and heartless lusts.

On night four they come back.

Awaiting a new life. Over and over... like I've been there before.

Living and breathing, but still choking.

A mirror stares back. I contort the wheels in my head...

Still nothing happens. Please wake up.

Prospect #2

I open my eyes to the smell of morning skin.

The soft touch of your hair.

Your breath I breathe in.

The reality chases and catches up on actual alertness.

I'm awake... a daydream... alone. Silence.

This is the last few years rolled into one new instance.

I need something new.

I jerk back in and out of a daydream self.

A backwards day... water surrounds.

A cool breeze wrapping its smell around my skin.

The mid day siren awakes what was a false idea of sleep.

Daydream society. Walking past what we used to see.

Beginning again.

(The runner's come to a halt. The air seems half full.)

Walking into a certain state of suffocation.

Confusion surrounds... day after day.

The questions I face... the dealings I deal.

Do I complete me? Do I complete humanity?

This day will determine it all.

Prospects #1 and #2

Mirror stares back again. I contort like the wheels in my head...

Still nothing happens. Please wake up.

Please wake me up.

Augment of Rebirth

Prospect #2

Moving forward.

Memories left behind. A new life, a new journey. I've built anew.

For mankind... for my kind.

The vessel stares back at me. From every angle, the menacing smile latches on.

Talking walls speak and spell my life story.

My past life.

The vessel sleeps beside me... the comfort breath.

Morning skin of machines, of humanity's beginnings.

Am I God? I've been called worse... drift in and out.

The vessel brings me sleep.

Hyper Sleep

Prospect #1

Mind bending strategy game. Running through obstacles on a land never ventured.

Every night. Every wake. Alone but not for long.

The signals worked. Did I want this? I must go back and explain my reasonings. Worse things have happened. Wose things will happen.

The old atlas is found. No matter what I do it's been done... it's been worse.

This is not reassuring. Imperfect. Improper. Extinct.

They have found me.

A new journey.

Prospect #2

I approach unfamiliar gound. Left standing with the air swirling silently.

A creepy siren, the siren of loneliness.

Twisting, falling, and screaming.

Please break me out.

The crumbling starts. Inch by inch the ground takes over.

The wretched clench of my insides.

Unspeakable anguish... this *censored*ing contortion.

Awake, mime standing.

Air swirling around me... silent.

Siren of loneliness. This is real isn't it? Can't tell these days, the longest *censored*ing days.

Why the anger I wonder?

(The mission must stay focused. I work day in and day out.)

To create. To recreate.

Have I become a god? I have been called much worse.

Secretly that title makes me feel comfortable.

In my place. It's been a while. This god-like complex does bring me a smile.

To create. To recreate.

Down to the last seed I stand with a dark stare. Still silent, still frighteningly silent. I must leave myself.

That's what all of this has gotten me... infinite life? Conquering of death.

The seed is planted.

Time to move on. What have I become?

I'll make my own life seem new.

Face all of my mistakes and grow.

Must grow.

Lunar Wilderness

Prospect #1

Many days and fewer nights... so I'm told.

I've lost my time years ago... so I'm told.

The explaining. The whispered words.

This will be the hardest part... so I'm told.

I wish my mind would work... unfold.

The explaining. The whispered words.

The front doors opened to the look of death. Will this make sense? Will this be comforting at all?

The questions dive in day and and night. Nothing we can do. Nothing I can do.

Twists and turns must be answered.

I hit land... so it seems.

The dirt chokes up my legs... strong air then shoots down my throat.

Sensory overload in an instant of sense.

Charting through the old water that I pushed away to drown.

Into another.

To find and be found.

This is what I've set out to do. Where is this door?

Prospect #2

The constant movement of my eyes. I can feel but I can't open the lids. The back of my skin is scarred, torn and broken.

A reflection of what I've seen. (What have I become?)

They let these people recreate. Maybe I should have ended it all. Too late?

Moving forward is a must.

Dig deep.

Commence sleep inside sleep.

Silence.

(An out of focus picture brings up a familiar scenario. Three people fill the room. There seems to be a fourth, but very small. We are speaking about some sort of mission. My mouth won't stop moving... talking way too much. Even through the blur I can feel their stares. This one sided discussion seems to be about what I am preventing. Is this a sign? Too late... I've said it before. The people then disappear. I look about and the western sky seems to be red... alone. I can smell burning flesh... scorched life. I turn around and the face of death stares so grim that the lids finally open...)

I'm close... very close. But something isn't right.

A horrifying realization is swept over me.

Home. The empty space of home.

All I've known is gone. All I've loved is lost.

Silence.

Good stuff Mendosuke!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFAY3-HxVuw

From the mind of Dan Swano comes Crimson. I was half tempted to post this as the link for Edge of Sanity in their prog death block of the metal gauntlet... but seeing as how it's a really long ass song, I opted for something shorter. Still, for those who haven't heard their magnum opus yet, it's worth checking out if you have about 40 mins.
