I wish we'd signed him for an extra season :(.

Even if they did, he would have retired anyway. Which would have been a waste of money for the Red Wings. I think them not re-signing him was a good move. Coz I had a feeling the past season would be his last. Nevertheless, he'll definitely be in the Hall of Fame in a few years time.

This also makes Modano the second US athlete to announce his retirement on a social networking site (first being Shaq).

Mike Modano has signed with the Stars for one day, so that he can retire as a member of the Stars. You can read all about it here:

Also, Nittymaki will be out for 12 weeks after undergoing surgery for a lower body injury.

Brendan Shanahan has banned Philadelphia Flyers forward Jody Shelley for the rest of the preseason and 5 regular season games due to an illegal hit from behind in the game against Toronto.

It's not even the regular season, and there's already been a heap of suspensions. So far, the following have been suspended:

-Jody Shelley (Philadelphia)

-Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond (Calgary)

-Brad Boyes (Buffalo)

-Brad Staubitz (Minnesota)

-James Wisniewski (Columbus)

-Jean-Francois Jacques (Anaheim)

I think there are more, but I don't know who they are. I got my info from here:

Anaheim managed to beat Jokerit 4-3 in OT, whereas Los Angeles beat Hamburg 5-4, and Buffalo beat Mannheim 8-3. Regular season starts tomorrow, with Boston taking on Philadelphia, Montreal taking on Toronto, and Pittsburgh visiting Vancouver.

On Friday, Anaheim will play Buffalo, and the Kings will play the Rangers. Speaking of the Rangers, Sean Avery and a few others have cleared waivers, and will be playing for the Rangers AHL team, the Connecticut Whale (formerly the Hartford Wolfpack). The Kings will also play the Sabres in Berlin.

This season will also be the 95th NHL season. Joe Thornton is 5 games away from reaching 1,000 games. Here's more stats:

Also, the Bruins receive their Championship Rings today:

I watched a documentary about the Winnipeg Jets of their team history/return to the NHL tonight on CBC, good stuff. Im rooting for them to do well and cant wait to see their game against the Habs on sunday. Also saw the NHL kickoff games in europe today, last 3 years team that started off in Europe ended up winning the cup, dont think that happens this season. Although maybe Buffalo goes to the finals but id see them lose to the Sharks.

I asked the NHL page on Twitter if they'd ever start the NHL season with games here in NZ. Unfortunately, they said they're gonna stick with Europe.

Buffalo beat Anaheim 4-1, and the Kings beat the Rangers 3-2 in OT. Tampa beat Carolina 5-1 and Detroit beat Ottawa 5-3. Nashville beat Columbus 3-2, and Dallas beat Chicago 2-1. The Rangers play Anaheim on Saturday. San Jose will also play their first game against Phoenix on Saturday as well.

NHL.com Analysists give their opinions on who will win the Stanley Cup:

A Sharks/Rangers Final would be good. Though a Sharks/Bruins Final would be even better.

You know guys, this topic could get more views and posts if ya actually post in here. After all, the regular season has started ;)

Colorado have retired Forsberg's #21 jersey in their game against Detroit tonight...they lost 3-0. Also, some glass-shattering vids. Just click the link:

I love the video of Fedotenko smacking the puck into the camera lens.

The Caps and Penguins will be wearing Lokomotiv patches on their jerseys when they play on Thursday in Pittsburgh. It was a combined idea of Ovechkin and Malkin, and they will be raising money for the crash victims' families. You can read all about it here:

I saw that fight on Twitter thanks to the WWE Universe page. The fight itself wasn't that great. I think it keeps getting mentioned because of that taunt.

But the most important question is...who won the game?

I don't think the NHL likes the Sharks. The Sharks have only played one game so far, and then play 3 games in four 4 days. They play the Ducks tonight and both teams will pay tribute to the KHL team. The Ducks will wear a #24 patch on their jerseys for Ruslan Salei, who played most of his career with the Ducks. Whereas San Jose will be wearing a sticker on their helmets recognizing Lokomotiv. The Sharks lost one of their prospects, 2011 sixth-round pick Daniil Sobchenko, in the crash.

But yeah, they play the Ducks tonight, and then St. Louis on Saturday, and then play Anaheim again on Monday. Ok sure, the 3 games are all in the state of California. But still, Pittsburgh has already played 5 games this season, with a lot of other teams having played 3 or 4 games (Dallas has played 4, winning 3 of them).

Asham has admitted that his taunt after the fight was classless (Click This Link). And the Sharks lose to the Ducks 1-0. Greiss stopped 22 shots, but Hiller played better. The Sharks are now 1-1.

I was at the Caps game last night against Ottawa. I was up on the upper concourse of the verizon center in section 423, it's probably the best view from that level because you can follow the puck much easier. So glad they won. They should have scored much better, but thank goodness for Vokoun, he blocked some real crazy shots. To top it all of I got my first Jersey.

My Buddies practically have everyone else, I wanted to get Backstrom but they suggest I either go with Perreault, or Chimera. I got Chimera since the name is much more epic lol.

Yay, the Hockey thread is active again :) As for Capitals jerseys, it's good to see someone own a jersey that isn't Ovechkin. Me personally, I'm trying to get a Caps jersey of Sergei Fedorov, Scott Hannan or Marco Sturm. Sure, none of them are no longer with the Caps, but I really don't want to buy myself a Marco Sturm Canucks jersey.

Also, the Ducks beat the Blues 4-2. Sharks play the Ducks on Monday.

^Colorado's currently leading 2-1 now.

NHL.com has started something like that of the Power rankings in the NFL, except it's the top 16 teams in the NHL:

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=596296&navid=DL|NHL|home

Even though I'm a Sharks fan, I don't think they should be in the top 16, considering they've only won one game. They play Anaheim tonight, and Niemi should be returning soon.

Avalanche win in 3-2 in OT, and take their road record to 5. And while there's still less than 15 minutes in the third to go, Winnipeg may get their first win of the season against Pittsburgh. And Florida beat Tampa 7-4.
